Is the starter turning but the engine not firing or it is not even turning atall?
Could be a solenoid problem?

Right,
I would suggest that maybe the battery hasnt got enough push to tick over the engine as well as produce a spark (have had this with the honda NSR), but saying that I know for a fact my Kymco Stryker 125 will run lovely without even having a battery in it (well, the engine at least). It all depends weather yr bike has the same electrical configuration...

did you charge the new battery?

Sounds like it could be an obscure one this Neutral

will it bump start ?, if it does, it would point towards a knackered solenoid or loose connections between the battery, solenoid & starter moter.

The backfiring could be becuase your turning the engine over to the point of flooding. Try cranking it over with no throttle at all.

You know, I'm on the edge of spreying an NSR white. Maybe some black decals or possibly a flourescent rozzer style (legal apparently, as long as it dosnt say police or match exactly!).

But that said as much as it appeals to me, you have to remember that white spoils easily and unless your willing to put the time in to keep it clean its not going to look fantastic most of the time Neutral

I'm now thinking light gun metal grey or something that would be less maintinance...

Smile

Ps, glad you got to the bottom of it, wiring is not uncommonly the problem but more effort than starting by looking at the battery haha.
