Looking at some part worn tyres on ebay, what are the tread depths usually on a new tyre because the ones I've seen say they have 4mm of tread all over so I'm not sure roughly how long these will last

Also my bike uses 120/65/17 on the front and the ones I've seen are 120?70/17 so will these fit or will I have problems?

This is what I'm thinking of for example https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PIRELLI-DIABLO-SUPERCORSA-120-70-17-180-55-17-PAIR-/180620154218?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item2a0dccd56a#ht_500wt_1156

Sorry for the boring tyre thread Laughing

Between 6 and 8mm from some research on the web, minimum is 1mm

Cool. I knew the minimum was 1 but wasn't sure what they start off as. A bit of research shows those Supercorsa's aren't really what I need for the road Laughing

Race worns are more for the sunday rider type who doesn't want to pay the £200+ for fancy tyres.

If you use your bike regularly, you'll get through a pair fairly quickly

I had them when I got my bike, absolutely crap in the wet, but I believe 5 MPH or so faster then my Roadsmarts in he dry. They never felt glued to the ground like my Road smarts but certainlyfelt faster.

Bad points, pretty much squared off and went to metal strip after a few spirited rides and 2 journeys, one 140 miles and the other 220.

I used them for commuting, including the 09/10 snow - no problems.
Well, doubt they were any worse in the snow that any other non-trail tyre and fine the rest of the time.

I'm always surprised by people saying they're not good in the wet.
Maybe they're not as good as some high-silica sports compound, but in decent shape they still tend to be better than touring compounds in my experience.

Ideally I think I need ones with a harder compound in the middle because of commuting. I had 2ct's on my Monster and they were perfect, the Maxxis I have on the rear of the ZX6 is very very slightly square and a little low on tread ( haven't been for a ride in ages only commuting! Sad )

At the end of the day I'm no hardcore rider as you all know Laughing

Not really had a problem with them in the wet unless theres standing water and your cranked over doing some speed.

The Supercorsa's may be OK but what about the size of the front that I mentioned?

Loads of people put 70 profile fronts on their bikes anyway to speed up the handling.

If it's a 60 profile as standard there can be slight mudguard clearance issues, but a 65 should be fine.

Ideally you should drop the yolks a little to compensate for the raise, but if you leave it, to some degree the increased height will compensate for the quicker steering tyre.

If the Maxxis rear felt fine, why not just get another one of those?

They seem to be cheap enough...

Unfortunately I think the F uses 160 and the G uses 170 as stock, however, pretty often did find people putting 180s on the G as there's better availability of them.

I wasn't saying they aren't good in the wet, just wear down quickly

If your still on the B1H then 120/70 is fine. 120/65 is the standard spec size, but most riders on B1H/B2H's will use 70 as 65 is quite difficult to find in the top brands.

Ah, fair enough. Though if you can get them cheap, I find they're still similar price per mile to much less sticky tyres. A little more hassle to fit.
When I was using them for commuting it was only averaging 15 miles a day, so not TOO bad.

In what way are they crap? Correct pressures? Suspension setup? Getting temp into them?

Ive not really found a 'bad' tyre, they all work at being tyres ( holding onto the road) but vary in how they perform. Some are quicker steering, but less stable and visa versa...

The mismatched tyres might not help, altho im guilty of doing the same. ( never really ran a touring tyre in combo with a sports tyres though, profiles are too different)

just to +1, 120/70 is pretty standard for b1h owners as there is far more tyre choice

I did the same on mine

I have. It was a maxxis.
Moaned about it before.
First time it let go I thought it was my stupidity, despite it being a SM tyre on a light bike when I've done the same on an old trail biased tyre on a heavier bike fine.

Next time I was braking gently on (quite steep downhill, but still) shell grip and I decided it was definitely the tyre that sucked.
No, it wasn't up to temperature, but it should still have more grip than that!

They just don't feel like they are gripping that well, not too great in the rain either although that could be because they are pretty low on tread. These are the tyres the bike came with. (Pirelli something front and Maxxis sport rear)

Who knows it might just be me! Laughing

Seemed everyone was raving about the Maxxis when I bought them, still haven't used them as the bike isn't done!

maybe its just a case of mis-matched and worn tyres that is shaking your confidence?

For example people rave about the standard diablos, but the worn pair that were on my zx7r when i got it were terrible. They would spin up in a straight line, worn badly square so they almost fell into corners as they went from the centre to the sides. The combination sapped my confidence completely.

Stuck a new set of tyres on, this time they were road 2's, but I think they could have been anything as any new set of tyres is going to feel absolutely great compared to an old knackard pair. The bike felt like a completely new bike afterwards.
