Option 1
CBT and get yourself a cheap commuter 125 though this would be thrashed to death on the motorway.
Option 2
Use the money to do your DAS before the stupid new rules come in. Use the rest to buy yourself a decent GS500, ER 5, GPZ 500.
Option 2 everytime The power from a 500 really shouldn't bother you although like all bikes it needs respect. I only use a 250 for cheap commuting and motorway capability. A 500 will be cheapish to run and cruise the motorway all day. ____________________ Current ride - Yamaha MT-07 |

i would do your DAS and get a cheap commuter bike, like a er5 or something like that, you can get for peanuts.
it will sit on motorways all day long but doesnt have enough power to get you into major trouble really probably your best bet.
and i could be wrong but isnt it illegal to go on the motorway without a full liscence? ____________________ KLX 300r |

You'll get another vote for DAS from me. Best thing I ever done bikewise. Put the money aside for the DAS and then get a bigger bike. cuts out the middle man and you'll love the world of biking on a bike that can do the speed limits without sounding like its about to explode. ____________________ illuminateTHEmind wrote: I am just more evolved than most of you guys... this allows me to pick of things quickly which would have normally taken the common man years to master

How long is a DAS course again? A couple of days? |
As long as you need, or arrange it. Normally around 14 hours of training time, taken in two hour weekly lessons or an intensive course over a week-end or so.
I used to commute 'home' and beyond on a 125 at University, Was at Manchester, and 'home' was Stratford Upon Avon, about two and a half hours down the A34 weaving along the route of the M6, becouse of teh L-Plates! Good fun!
With £1.5K in your savings, I'd advice against DAS. A course is likely to set you back half what you have in the bank.
On another thread, I suggested to another learner, budget £200 for your test fees and a little 'contingency', another £200 for CBT and rider training (if you can squeek it before your CBT expires this will leave you £60 or so towards a bike!) Then £200 for insurance, and then another £200 towards riding kit, Helmet and gloves and water proofs etc.
Thats £800 for all the stuff you'll need BEFORE you go looking at a bike. I then suggested £800 is a good figure to go looking for a bike with.
Buys you a very useful Learner-Commuter like a four to five year old YBR125 in good condition that will make learning and tests easy, and sell in a couple of months for what you paid for it, leaving you enough to go looking for a useful big-bike.
If you go DAS, you will have to bump the training costs up from £200 to at least £600, which takes half the money for finding a big bike..... meaning you'll be scraping the barel, and though you could ride an unrestricted full power hyper-bike, if you dont have the dosh to but more than an MZ250 or old 400 Super-Dream, not much point having it, really!
May as well get the restricted licence, and put the extra towards a better condition 33bhp bike to ride out your restriction on. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

Just wondering what new rules they are bringing in? I heard they are scrapping the whole module 1 and 2 thing aswell? |
They have a whole load of draft and consultative papers out there. Basically they HAVE to pass new legislation by 2013, and implement a 'stepped' licence system.
The detail is being argued and firmed up, but essence is, instead of passing your test and getting a 'full' licence, you'll get a 'restricted' licence, that will let you ride bikes of limited power and capacity, PROBABLY close to but a bit 'more' than current 33bhp bikes.
But where now, you are restricted to 33bhp bikes for two years after passing the test, then anything you like after that two year probation lapses, under teh stepped scheme, it will be a forecer thing, and IF you want to ride a big bike you'll have to re-do ALL the tests again, to get a full licence, and you wont be able to do that until two years have lapsed since doing the tests for a restricted licence.
The Mod 1 test is on the cards to be scrapped, but still in the detail, and may become part of the CBT or part of the full practical. Either way they will work a similated manouver test in there somehow. The theory and Hazard perception will remain.
In essence it will be much as now, only MOD 1 will probably be done as part of an extended (and more expensive) practical. And doing your test will only get you half a licence. You'll have to do it all twice to get a full licence as is now.
And they will tangle it all up in lots of more confusing red-tape concerning age limits and Direct Access and Accelerated access schemes.... as well as power and capacity limits...
As far as age limits go, I believe that DAS testing will go to 24 or 25, rather than 21. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

Sound a plausible plan? |
If you pass your test this spring, you're 33bhp restriction should be almost expired by the time they have finalised passed and made law the stepped system, and you will have a full licence, so I dont think it would be any great advantage.
Doing DAS is going to chunk an extra £400 of training costs out your budget, and that's IF you pass 1st time.... DAS gets expensive very quickly if you dont!
So, keeping costs as skinny as you can, get the licence on a 125.
After that, get your ER5, and restrict it.
THEN if you want to get teh restriction lifted, firstly there's no pressure, it will automatically dissapear after two years anyway, but you can do accelerated Access.
Means paying for extra test on a 'full-power' bike..... but, take washers out your ER5 you have one, don't you?
You don't have to pay the full DAS training fees, and if you have to repeat, but cant afford it, well doesn't jepordise actually being on the road, or getting your unrestricted licence... that is a given two years from pass date.
There's a lot of pressure for people to do DAS, especially if they are over 21, and good arguments offered, especially by Rider-Training Schools where DAS courses are where they make thier money more often than not, and which the insturctors often preffer giving, as stood on a wet windy play-ground, dodging CBTers launching bikes at them when they muff thier clutch control can be miserable, and wobbling about behind yet another Chinese 125, squaring tyres while reminding them to cancel thier indicators, and not get the school radio operators licence revoked for using 'obscenities' on commercial airwaves, can be frustrating.....
So no.... in your case, watching the pennies, preparing to be shafted for tuition fees etc..... watch the pennies, go for the least-cost / most gain option.....

The target implementation date is 2013... but we're talking the government here..... with other cirisis clogging the system, may not get to parliment until 2013, may not get 'passed' until the end of it... and they wont be able to implement the new rules until it is.
But, if it doesn't get much opposition, could be walked through as a formality, and the new system in effect early 1013, so two years from now.
If you are on a valid CBT cert at the moment, and plan to get your tests done and out the way before it expires, it probably wont effect you, except in the log-jam effect of people rushing to get their licences ahead of the new laws, stretching out the test appointment waiting lists.
So best to get in early, and being a bit 'wise' I was in a similar boat twenty odd years ago when they introduced the 'persuit-test' and they didn't have enough examiners, and long waiting lists, coupled to a bike that kept getting nicked, meant it took nearly two years for me to get off L's! Snowie is in the same boat, she's been on CBT for six years and the delays of nicked or broke bikes has been whats stalled her progress.
A 'stoopid' little problem, like that can knock you back more than you think, so apart from carying on, carying on, and not putting off becouse of.... be a bit more protective of the bike, so you dont mash it or break it, and lock the fucker up EVERY bludy where! Big chains, BIG BIG chains! Make sure you have it when you need it! ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!
