Has anyone tried using a webcam for cctv? if so what quality do you get and how big would the file sizes be if it was left on over night? I need to increase security due to some scallys hanging around recently and I am concerned that they are up to something.

One of my mates has got one set up to take a still every minute. That may not be often enough for your needs but I'll ask him how he's done it anyway. You can always reduce the gap some.

You can download programs off www.download.com - I've tried a lot of these and most of them work great.

A lot of the programs take about 10 pictures (or whatever you set it to) when it senses movement, so if there was no movement, it won't take any pictures.

You can get some webcam programs which actually act as you want - they only take a picture if something moves in shot!

Then they can email you the pic or put it on the net etc.

As for what the name of the program is..... it escapes me. But there is a program out there that will do just what you need and because it only takes pictures when something moves it wont fill your hard drive with pictures with nothing new in.

If the name comes back to me I'll post, but if you do a search you'll come across such a program I'm sure.

Just looking through the Argos catalogue and some of them say, "Motion detection software included." The cheapest one with it is £19.99 and is Logitech which aren't too bad.

I'll probably go get that one tomorrow because I need to get one as my brother nicked his one back. Evil or Very Mad

The Logitech software which comes with their cameras has a motion detector function, it records a 30 second video clip every time it detects something moving. Useful for keeping an eye on your stash or if you ever wondered what you do when you're asleep Smile

It also has timelapse, stop motion and a bunch of other cool things to play with.
