PostPosted: 11:50 - 05 Feb 2011    Post subject: Clutch Service Advice Needed Reply with quote

Hi all,

I have a Yamaha YZF 600 R Thundercat

I picked up the bike a few weeks ago and noticed on the ride home the clutch was slipping high up in the rev rage for a few seconds and when would bike again. Not all the time but once in a while.

Anyway i have had a look at the clutch friction plates and they are all within the service limits stated in the Haynes manual, as are the metal plates also. I measured them very accurately with a vernier calliper. Also visually they seem in very good condition and dont look worn out at all.

I then measured the 6 springs (3 short & 3 Long) and all of them are below the service limit stated in the Haynes manual. Would this alone cause the clutch to slip?

At the moment im thinking what's the best route to take

(1) get a complete clutch kit (friction plates/metal plates/springs) for £120

(2) Get the friction plates and springs only for £85

(3) just get the springs for £10 as they seem to be the only parts that are not within the service limit stated in the manual?

The oil when i drained the engine was fairly clean, so im assuming the previous owner did an oil change not that long ago, but i cant be sure what oil he used, as if he used car oil then the friction plates might be contaminated and this might be where my problem lies

Its also possible looking at the friction plates that these have been changed in the past but they haven't changed the springs at the same time

Thanks

Car oil used or clutch cable incorrectly adjusted?

for £10 just try some springs, if it doesn't fix it its not like you've gotta throw em away so just buy some friction plates then.

Do an oil change (as I think you have already) as its possible the oil was no good.

If that doesn't do it, do the springs.

You shouldn't need to replace the plates if they are within service limit, but it is possible they have been contaminated.

Best thing you can do is go to Wilkinsons, and buy yourself a 5 litre bottle of 10W40 semi synthetic oil. Do 2 oil changes about 200 miles apart.

Then go to Halfords and buy some Castrol 10W40 and get yourself an oil filter too. Then do an oil and filter change, with the springs too.

Hope that helps!

I have heard using some fully synthetic oils can cause clutch slip on certain models, so it may be a possibility. BTW, £85.00 seems a bit steep for just friction plates and springs.

I have decided to do the springs first along with an oil change and then take it from there

If this doesn't solve it then i can assume the friction plates are contaminated and change them

Soak the existing plates in the correct oil for a few days.
Stirring the oil twice a day atleast.

that should help, maybe.

i have no idea what that would achieve other than a complete waste of time.

Hi Guys,

I have fitted new springs, a new set of clutch friction plates and filled up with some Castrol bike oil, all good there BUT i have no clutch now at all. Theres no resistance in the lever at all it just goes in and out without moving the clutch at all

I do remember pressing the lever when the clutch was apart so im guessing this is where i have mucked it up. any ideas where i need to start looking?

Thanks

What you mean it is constantly on? As if the lever is in but its out and you can change through the gears and the wheel does not spin?

Or the opposite?

Well I imagine it was what I said.

I did my clutch once and you have to match up a notch on the hub with one on the crankcase (i think it was). If you didnt, it was like the clutch was permanently on :/
