That whine...

I have liked vfr's since I saw one a couple of years back. Its not really the high revving sound, its the low revving sound. The mixture of the v4 slowly revving and this 'whine' I am on about. This is the only reason, sort of, why I want a vfr.

After watching a video just a second ago, it seems cb500's have it.

Now do any other bikes have this same whine, preferably twin?

And what causes the whine and why?

I always thought part of the VFR 'whine' was the gear driven cams, which the CB500 won't have.

The whine is from the straight cut cam gears. The cbr400 has them too (I think), as for a twin? I'm not too sure but the sp1/2 might have them...

The whine is caused by the straight cut gears for the cam shafts, most of the NC series have them, such as the CB-1, CB400, CBR400, RVF400, the Hornet 250 also had them.

I'm not sure of any others, but it's pretty much unique to the baby Honda's from the late 80's and early/mid 90's (although there are sure to be others I haven't listed and from outside that time)

the sp1 and 2 were chain driven

its only the cbr 250/400's
and the vfr series up to the vtec 800s and including the vf1000r
apprilia is bringing out gear driven cams for there rsv4

and ducati have bevel driven cams in there older bikes
and there race rep D16RR has proper gear driven cams

The whine on bikes with chain driven cams is probably the primary gear. Many bikes have spur geared primaries, and I've yet so see one that didn't have spur gears in the gearbox.

SP1 and 2 had gear driven cams, absolutely unmistakeable sound

It was the little VTR firestorm that was chain driven afaik. That RSV4 gear kit is pretty much unobtainable though which is a huge shame as I wager it'd sound utterly immense on a road bike.

I would seriously consider buying a vfr but they just get ruined.by 17 year olds. With the il4s though, I don't feel they compliment the gear driven cams (see I'm learning )
