Was removing and cleaning spark plugs today, no big deal.

When putting one of the plugs back in I was a bit distracted and not paying enough attention to what I was doing. Severely overtightened it, something broke and now the plug is loose and I can't tighten it.

I managed to get it out to have a look, the plug itself seemed fine so I'm a bit concerned I've damaged the thread on the cylinder.

I put the plug back in, and tried tightening it again, but it spins freely. Unfortunately it has enough of a hold on something that I can't get it out now either.

So, anyone done this before? I'm just a bit panicked that I've damaged the thread on the cylinder and this is going to cost a fortune to repair.

It sounds very much like you have damaged the thread on the cylinder head, when the plug came out was there metal in the threads?

The normal course of action is cylinder head off, hole tapped and a new thread fitted (i.e. helicoil), cylinder head back on, owner buys a torque wrench to stop it happening again.

You might find someone willing to tap it out in situ but then you risk swarf finding it's way into your engine and doing nasty things. Getting the head off will turn out to be quite labour intensive though. What bike is it?

Great, just what I needed. What a tube I am, just don't know my own strength.

It's the bike in my avatar. RVF400.

I can't afford to spend any money on repairing it Sad Sad Sad

But no, I did not notice any metal in the threads.
