Right, MPG is reducing, flat spot at 4-5,000rpm is growing and the bike is getting harder to start. Sound like the carbs need balancing?

If so, how easy is it to do. I've got a week off work from the 14th and if I'm going to be doing anything, then is the time to be doing it.

Very straight forward on both my CBR and R6, also did it on my brothers Tiger and Daytona no probs. Made huge differences.

If you don't have vac gauges, I recommend CarbTune Pro

I'd also check the valve clearances whilst you're at it. The 250 was hard to start when still warm. Only out abit on the inlet. Fires-up fine again.

No. I attempted to at Christmas but couldn't get past getting two coolant pipes out from the engine.

See this thread.

And damn at the vacuum gauges. I didn't want to spend any money Laughing

I'm only in Warrington, so if you're stuck, I have a set of vac gauges you can use.

Only half hour job every time I've done it.

You should really do the valve gaps before you balance the carbs. If you were closer I'd happily do it for you.

Shhh!

I know, but Mr. Kawasaki and his chums can't design for shit, and it's such a faff trying to get the pipes out from the cylinder head, and why I failed last time.

Make yourself a manometer if ya cant afford vac gauges.

You may find this site useful as it has guides for all the matinance tasks on the ex500 which uses the same engine as the er5.

it has several tuts for doing valve clearences all with full colour pics and there is even a video of it too

I know how to do the valves on the bike, it's just getting to them that is the problem.

Have look at my previous valve clearance thread and you'll see where I was struggling Thumbs Up

Just thought I would update this.

Balanced the carbs today with the balancer I borrowed off Phil. Much smoother, picks up better from low revs and the flat spot I had is barely noticeable. Will update with mpg figures once I have some Thumbs Up

Just out of interest but can you remember how far out they were before you adjusted them?

Four, possibly, but I'm not entirely sure.
