Well I was coming home late from work the other night and didn't quite realise how slippery the road was. Came off after sliding the bike around a bit (almost caught it Razz) but it wasn't to be.

Landed on the left hand side, on the plus side it seems to have fixed my poor gearbox issues a treat, its very nice to ride now, but my fuel tank has a sizeable crater in the side, perhaps, 6cm by 5cm, and a couple of cm's deep. I got a quote for a new tank, £650 and I don't have that sort of money to throw on it, so I asked in a shop about alternatives, they said they could fill it, respray and buff it up for 150-180. And I'm going to keep looking on ebay Smile.

Once again a lot more than I have. I'm thinking about going for it though, possibly after giving it a go myself? I used to do basic stuff like this in school and I'm up for giving it a go, but it'd be the painting it would worry me, any one know of any guides I could follow to do this or give me a brief run through?

OR just how to protect it till I've saved enough to pay for it to get done at the shop, I've gone over the bare metal in black marker pen to hide it, but that won't protect it.

Finally, I bought some renthal bars to replace the current ones, If I do have to stretch the cables a bit will it affect my 'throttle assault' (33bhp)? I should be ok for it though, they're slightly wider, but lower so I'm hoping they reach.

Thanks Smile

If you're not too fussed about colours matching, then Ebay is going to be the best bet.

If you do want an exact match, then once again, ebay will be the best bet, but you'll just have to wait longer. I wated 3 months for a black front fender on my bandit! (thats because mine's the 2000 model, where they changed the shape)

As for the bodging it temporarily, can't you just leave it? or maybe take it off and knock it back from the other side?

You may have to adjust the cables for the Handlebars, both clutch and lever, but you should have enough cable for it to reach. If yours is carbed bandit (mine is) then it'll be restricted through inlet washers, rather than throttle restricted, so you needn't worry about that.

What colour is it? If its just one single colour (hopefully black) won't be too difficult to do yourself. Thumbs Up

ITs a 58 plate 650 bandit fuel injected, the FI kit i got from the garage said throttle assault, they fitted it though Smile.

Also yes, its a black bandit, but I think I may give it a go myself, but look out for a good one on ebay?

The only thing I'm worried about leaving it is its bare metal, the paints all gone, and I've gone over it in black marker, but will that stop the tank from rusting?

Thanks again guys Smile

The marker will only make a very temporary visual difference. The rust WILL find it's way there unless you cover the area sufficiently.

Assuming it's not an area that's likely to be rubbed by clothing etc,
I'd suggest ACF50 if you can afford it, or PTFE spray / MucOff Maintenance spray as an alternative. Even something like car wax if there's nothing else available

If you are 100% getting a new tank then I'd put something cheap and effective like hammerite metal paint over it for now. Might dissolve if you spill petrol on it mind. Alternatives are a lot more PITA, rub it down, primer, few coats of colour and then some petrol resistant lacquer. If you are going through all that you may as well fill it at the same time and attempt to get it loking reasonable.

Personally, I'd hammerite it and keep an eye on ebay for a new one, a filler and spray job from rattle cans WILL look crap when done by 99% of people and your bike is too new to go the rat bike route just yet Very Happy .

If it makes you feel any better, the rust patches on my car have been kept at bay now for about 3 years by rubbing babybell cheese wax onto them Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up, it is a surprisingly effective bodge up.

Cheers guys Smile

I think I'll hammerite over it until I get a new tank Smile

One last thing from when I came off I'm slightly worried about wheel alignment, My clocks are bent so its very difficult to tell if the front out, but occasionally the back just seems to slide a little bit, any quick way of checking? I will say since I came off I've been 70mph and had no problems, not sure if this means the wheels/forks could still be out?

Just claim on your insurance, it's why we have it.

For the majority of people, claiming on insurance is not cost effective.

When you take into account the excess and the future cost of insurance due to loss of NCB and having a claim on your record MOST people would be better off fixing up small accidents themselves. I would need to do over £800 of damage to my bike before it made economic sense to claim.
