Today I nearly came off my bike where there had been come roadworks. I knew there had been roadworks and was turning at that place and so I thought I would go really slowly and still the front wheel slipped. On inspections there is a pile of fine gravel that has been left behind that you can barely see but is really fine. Is there someone we can contact in such a situation where we can report these issues for someone to resolve?

Of course it would be nicer if the road work guys didn't leave it behind in the first place as if the bike had gone down I suspect I would not be able to claim it from them?

I was out for a run today on country roads and had a lot of problems with a line of grit, mud and stones down the middle of the lane. I felt the back wheel take a step out at one point.

The local authority or if devolved a company (usually signed) have responsibility for the roads.

Grit deposited by the roads authority when it is icy and general crud is their responsibility.

Muck from farms and building sites is not, but they have a duty to act to deal with such.

Gordano, on the M5 is a dangerous road services, walking inside you may find someones dropped their Big Mac, and the burger grease combined with the smooth floor could cause you to slip & fall, I'd recommend stopping at the next one, Sedgemoor I think

The road surfaces arent that great either.

Had a similar thing the other week.

Following my brother to his house he now lives in with his girlfriend (I've never been before and didn't know the route to take). Goes along a road that was being taken up one side and the other side was laid recently (1-2days at most?) and noticed that although my brakes were working perfectly all the time before, on this road they had no effect, ended up slowing down by coming off the throttle and praying to god. Tried to stand up on the stuff and nearly went arse over tit. Diesel and oil all over the place (it hadn't been raining so didn't see it) from the freshly laid tarmac and roadwork vehicles...

Sufficed to say I went and had a 'polite' word with one of the workmen who noted it to his foreman (watched him) and he apologised and said he would note the 'near miss' with his company as it has a public responsibility.. I would have seriously done some damage to the guy if I had come off..

Surfaces, not 'Services', which are often found on motorways.

Yes, afraid we haven't had enough bikes out clearing all the grit and sand off the roads...Or long dry spells where the HGVs blow it to the sides.

Local Council. I got on to mine about potholing at the end of my road, and before I could even get a proper "Useless sponging tossers, taking all my money and giving nothing back" rant going, they'd fixed them all. Mad

Coming away from rugby out a carpark last night I was a bit keen on the old throttle, cue me tailarseing all over the road.

I'm sueing the tyre maker, the road sweeper, the council and the lifeboat association. And the pope.

Twats, almost made me crash.

Probably asphalt bitumen mastic surface dressing.

It's a real bitch for about the first week it's down until all the loose crumbs have been compacted into the sufrace by the vehicles going over it.

Trouble is, that's how it works. The road surface is formed by the action of the vehicles that drive on it.

They are supposed to leave loose chipping signs with a temporary 10 or 20mph speed limit up until it's settled. Most people ignore them.

I have experienced some recently that were like glass for weeks after though, and they didn't leave the signs up. Irresponsible with reference to the signs and almost certainly poor engineering with regard to the choice of chipping size. A top tip is if they haven't painted the white lines on it yet, proceed with extreme caution.
