2nd Gear wont work properly ?

Hi i have just purchased a Mtx200, got her running and in 2nd gear it is like neutral when the bike is running. But when its not running 2nd will lock the engine up. Also it does shift into 3rd and it works well. 1st also works well.

I heard the mtxs had a problem with the gears but this just seems strange that it will lock when its not running, Maybe a worn shift fork ?

My other question is, is the Mtx125 and Mtx200 transmition the same ? can i repair my 200 with the 125 parts from my 125 engine ?

i had a look at her today, and when i say lock up it makes the engine turn. anyway when i shift into 2nd it makes the shaft with the sprocket go in and out. It also sticks inbetween neutral and 2nd. when you turn the engine and shift again it pops into 2nd.

Am i right in guesing that theres a bur on my shift drum ? or a worn shift fork ?
I really dont want to pull her apart because the gaskets are rare and not to mention expensive.

Sounds like a worn selector fork or forks or selector barrel. You'll most likely have to strip it down and remove the parts to measure them for excessive wear.

As for the gaskets, get yourself some gasket paper and a soft mallet and go old school and make your own.

Or do what my dad used to do on his old CZ and make a head gasket out of a Cornflakes box Laughing

any old thin card and a smear of instant gasket used to work wonders when I worked in a garage (not the cowboy sort though.... yeee haaaw).

Have you tried getting it into gear without the clutch when riding?

Made myself a gasket out of a primark brown paper bag the other day.

Brown paper for the win Smile

yeah i tryed shifting without using clutch, i think 2nd isnt working at all to be honest. and i tryed making gaskets from card before on a 2 stroke 250 quad with some copper heat gasket paste. Only lasted a day.

Almost certainly going to be the gear selector fork - MTX 125 and 200 are well known for wearing them down. The 'pads' on the forks are only about a millimetre thick, so a little bit of wear on them, means that 2nd gear won't select and /or 'sticks'.
The shift drum themselves are made of tough metal and I've never seen any wear on that part, but is more likely that the alloy crankcase has worn down where the shift drum is housed.

I think that the gearbox components are the same on the 125 as the 200. The gear selector forks are definetly the same.

Check that the crankcase gasket is available. Honda has discontinued them, so it will be probably a case of ringing around the dealers to find one.

Do a search on here for the issues of the water pump drive shaft when splitting the crankcases.

finaly pulled her apart today, and found the 2nd gear shift fork had not only wore the pad part off but had also cut into the fork itself. Replaced it for the forks out of my 125 which were in good condition and put her back together, shifts through the gears now !
