Simple answer is to ask the insurance company. There may be a penalty if you cancel. I'm assuming that you are third party only? If not then surely the insurance company should have been informed so that you can make a claim?

Don't worry about the DVLA. If anything happens then you have the theft registered with the Police and, I hope, a crime number.

Did you claim on the insurance for the bike?
If you cancel it, the insurers will want more money, always do Rolling Eyes Thumbs Down

Mine was cheaper to carry on... so I did so Laughing
But no, no comebacks to you as long as you reported it stolen, my bike was stolen a few years back and plate cloned, mounted to a sports bike racking up fines in London bus lanes Laughing Got a bill all together for around £600. Said was stolen, sent crime ref number and all was cleared Thumbs Up

DANGER! If you aren't going to claim on the policy, do not tell your insurer that the bike was stolen.

Every insurer in future will ask you about "claims, accidents or losses" and you disclose the theft, your risk will rise and you'll get nobbed even if your insurer didn't pay out a penny. If you don't disclose the theft, then you risk having your policy invalidated when they discover it later.

Ask your insurer about cancelling the policy, sure, but don't tell them why. It's none of their business.

Or just ask them in future tense.

Bummer, but pretty common now. I hope you get the bike back even now, or at least that the thieving pikies that took it get cancer of the bell end.

You get a percentage back of the premium if you cancel.

If you're paying monthly, then it's not monthly insurance. But yearly insurance that you pay monthly.

So if you cancel, and you've not paid up to the percentage you get back, you still owe them money.

If you have to make a claim, you generally have to pay the remaining value of the premium as well.

Now, I'm no insurance expert, but if a policy remains in force on a vehicle, the insurance company is obliged to pay out a valid 3rd party claim, regardless of who it's ridden by?

If the policy requires you to notify of loss within a reasonable time, then surely it's not beyond the realms of possibility that the insurer may, as the joyrider subsequently quadra-spazzers a crowd of schoolkids whilst killing himself, come back to the policyholder to reclaim the costs on the basis that you didn't 'fess up?

(I appreciate that it's possibly hypothetical, certainly unlikely, but I wouldn't trust an insurer as far as I could throw them!)

Probably been stripped for parts and/or has been burned out by joyriders after thrashing the hell out of it! No doubt several wires have been cut to hot wire it plus the ignition chewed up too.

My 1st bike was recovered by Police and thats what happened to mine as stated above, but it took them a year later catch the little shit head teenager that did it via DNA, as he left one of his trainers behind when he ran after being chased by Police. My bikes engine casing was cracked due to dropping of the bike plus it was missing it's side stand, mirrors and several other parts too. So, it would have cost more to fix it and so it was written off by the insurance provider.

I believe that you are technically correct, sir.

The best kind of correct.

Yes, that is actually a valid consideration. That's a bit of a pickle, and no mistake. You're likely a bit screwed if you do report it, and potentially very screwed if you don't. I think it's vanishingly unlikely that an insurer would come after an individual like that, but if they do, you might as well get your copy of Bankruptcy For Dummies up front.

Well, cheerfully corrected then: if it's only going to cost you a little more to cancel (without telling them why) then you should do so, for the reason given above.
