I just dropped my 6 month old Shoei helmet. Cost me £300 when I bought it, and the drop was enough to knacker an air vent so I'd rather not take any chances and replace it.

Having cost me £300 though I was hoping to replace it a little bit cheaper than splashing out again. I have home insurance that covers accidental damage to belongings in my house. Do you reckon it'll cover this? I can give them a ring tomorrow obviously, but it's nice to have an idea of whether it's likely to be successful or not. Would much rather pay a £75 (or £100 excess, have to check my policy) than £300.

Has anyone had any experience of replacing a dropped helmet on home insurance? Easy or a fight?

Not a helmet but a few years ago I claimed on the house insurance for leathers & boots after a spill at Cadwell. No issues with it at all.

Possibly get it xrayed and a new vent? I've heard Arai spokesmen talk about dropping them from average height will not damage them

When my GF had a spill last year her 1 month old Shoei XR1000 took a scrape down the road. She contacted Shoei and the man say no - they don't x-ray them if it's damaged it's scrap basically.

Probably correct saying they don't x-ray them but it's bollocks to say it's scrap if it's just cosmetic damage. It's obviously in their interest to do so.

As for the insurance I claimed new lid/jacket/gloves on my house insurance when I had a crash.

Hey to the guys who said they claimed on their insurance, who were you insured with and did you have to come up with a story to make the home insurance pay?

My home insurance said they wouldn't pay as it was a motor vehicle accessory and excluded (esure) but having looked through the policy booklet the only exclusion I can see relating to that is for "Personal possessions cover away from the home." So I think I'm being fobbed off, so I'm gonna ring them back up and try and get them to sort it out properly this time. Seeing as I paid for accidental damage cover and it did actually happen inside the house!

It would be nice to know for future insurers who you have that have dealt with this sort of thing no problem, cos esure refused to pay out on a hob last year as part of contents after it got smashed (as that is covered in buildings, which I duly found out is not!) and having read through their policy booklet in detail today it looks like they fobbed me off that time and should have paid out on that aswell! So I'll be looking to change at renewal.

So yeah, did you have any problems at all or have to come up with a story for those of you who had accidents, or are your insurers just not as much of a bunch of pr***s as esure?!
