Posted: 12:55 - 03 Jan 2004 Post subject: An idea for a private contacts forum type thing |
|
|
A lot of meet ups and things go on and there have been times (usually last minute while trying to organise meeting for R&B or something) when we have gone bugger I could have sworn I had so and so's mobile number. We have also had a couple of 'I wish I had known you were in the area you could have popped in'.
Would it be an idea to have a 'contacts' forum in the private forum area?
This could be a forum open to the proven regulars / participators only and could contain a sticky with no chat but only perhaps a mobile number (only as much info as they were happy for their fellow regular BCF'ers to know) and not an address but a rough location of where you live (e.g Reading) so if fellow BCFers found themselves 'in your area'.
I was also thinking that we could do a map on someone’s web space with dots on locating the rough areas of where people live to give a BCF members map of the UK? (Granted in some peoples cases there would have to be arrows pointing way off the edge!) This is something I would be happy to attempt as I have an example but I would probably end up needing help!
Now I know the stupidity of pasting you info on the internet for people to see but I am presuming that:
- The private forums are just that
- No one would post more then they were happy with, e.g. a mobile number
- It would be generally among people who would exchange mobile numbers anyway
Any constructive comments on this? ____________________ - |

There is, I belive, still a map thingy on BCF somewhere, I couldn't find the link after a quick search but I have seen it before.
I am sure that there are people on here that would be more than happy to share their details online (Securely) in order to arrange meeting etc.
Maybe someone could design a Outlook style address book, password protect it and post it on there page, or maybe even Korn has the space to post it on the BCF 'server'.
Id be up for sharing. Good idea.
I also think could have mug shots of people in the 'Address book'. For those of us who have never met the rest of you before, You go off to meet someone you have never seen, it could get a bit dodgy.
Imagine:
"Hi, are you ___? I'm meant to be meeting ____ who I met on the internet..."
"No but ill have your bike" *Thump*

Looking for WildGoose at Chelsea Bridge was 'interesting'.
Back on topic though, sounds like a good idea, but I can see conflict over who are long standing members (maybe i'm just being paranoid).
Also I have no idea about online security, but I'm sure Korn (or whoever does this) will/should put up some extra security. |

If the photo idea is not for everyone... maybe a secret handshake or some kind of a *nod* *wink* *nod* *smile* ... although that would probably cause more pain that anything else
I recon:
* Photo
* Nickname
* Real name
* Address (+ Country)
* Email Address
* Phone number
* and or Mobile number
Anyone else think of anything that should be there?

This has been discussed a few times.
The main issue are the way we usually detail all our bikes on this forum.
Easy enough for someone to hang around for a few months, and get a nice little 'shopping list'.
Not saying it wouldn't be possible for someone to come to some meets etc and get a few people's details, but it's a whole load easier if you can have them presented to you in a list.
The map though, I think could be explored more... I did start making a map a while ago, but korn obviously was slightly less lazy as me . |

I think it's a top idea (well I would - wouldn't I )
However I agree with G about the addresses - I don't think they are needed as we an always phone or PM that sort of thing.
Mobile number, photo and name should be enough.
Maybe (don't ask me) it might be possible to do links from the map to each persons entry? But then again, that might be far too much work ____________________ I spend all my money on bikes and beer, the rest I simply waste! |

Don't see the need personally, if you're coming to meet us for the first time you ask a few people for their mobile number. If you meet regularly, you have people's details anyway.
If you're trying to find us at Boxhill or the like, you know what bikes we all have, look for them all parked together. *cough cough BCF stickers cough*.
Isn't our level of disorganisation one of our charms?

Could work, but as Bendy says, if you're meeting people somewhere you tend to take a mobile number with you and ring them. And mobile numbers can be saved into your phone
And on that note, my mobile number has changed, so if you had my old one send me a pm and I'll send you my new one.
My only concern would be posting up details knowing people who we have no idea who they are other than a name on the forum will be able to get. Would need it only to be for people we know and have met etc. |

It would probably take a bit of working but how about intergrating some msn type workings, ie, "Allow this person to view your details" and you have to say who can or can not see your info?
To much work? I don't know.

But this is the 21st Century, the age of big brother etc
Big brother growing up and becoming the daddy. You should go with it and cower beneath him!

I just reckon the whole BCF sticker idea is a good one.
Large meets. the only bikes with BCF stickers will be the ones to look for.
as far as going up to someone and saying "are you <insert stupid username here>?" Then for those who have not met how about just saying something along the lines of

Well it doesn't apply so much to you Hippy, because
a) you're the only person I know with a Benelli Tornado
b) you know what everyone else looks like, and its likely that everyone else will have BCF stickers on their bikes.
Plus your Avatar has a piccy of your bike, as does mine ( and my avatar even includes me!!)
