Hi there, I have a tank which had petrol in it for a good while which obviously rusted the inside of the tank. Now I have orangey water, I've emptied the tank the best I could but is there anything else I can do?

Thanks alot

hi,
cheap option is to rinse out (with fresh fuel) & buy a couple of cheap in-line fuel filters.
& just replace filter when it gets grubby.
preferred/more expensive option is petseal or similar.
cheers,
GAZ

Get a load of nuts and thread them loosely on a loop of string.

Put the nuts in the tank with a little bit of fuel and swoosh it about so the nuts scrape about on the inside of the tank. Drain the now rusty fuel and repeat until too tired or the tank is clean. Then fish the nuts out (hence the string).

I have also heard of people wrapping their tank in an old blanket, adding the nuts and fuel then sitting it inside a cement mixer while they go and make a cup of tea.

POR15 is a superior product to petseal if you want to chemically seal the tank.

Utter waste of time, just fill the bugger with vinegar for a day or so

Have used smashed windscreen glass years ago but , wouldn't think modern ones would do, as they don't shatter the same .
So stringed nuts are Thumbs Up

see here

instead of TSP just use water and soda crystals and a metal coat hanger

Practical Sportsbike Magazine, issue 5 (current issue, £3.99 off the shelf), the procedure for de-rusting the tank is detailed in it with nice pictures. I far prefer to read and see it myself, although i'm happy to type it all out for you if you'd like.

To summarise very briefly:
Remove tank.
50/50 mix of water and degreasing solution.
Add fishtank gravel (pre-washed).
Shake tank endlessly.
Drain (takes ages).
Do it again.
Dry tank.
Add some stuff called Jenolite.

Just a quick note for anyone that's a little too ready with their spam karma rating - i've got no ties to the magazine, bar suscribing to it as a consumer.

I remember that Coca-Cola (not the generic brands out there) is good for eating through rust and goodness knows what it does to your stomach? Leave over night full and, if so, used I would certainly rinse out any remaining signs of Coca-Cola out of it.

As said earlier install an inline filter to prevent any possible crap getting into the carbs!

I have used it..... its pretty useless, except for light surface rust.
i suggest making it up with less water than it says on the tub.
but for a pound, it was worth a gamble.
but its more for immersing things, in a plastic bucket overnight,
cheers,
GAZ.
PS :im still trying to establish what the active ingredient is,CODE 5592, wtf that is, lol.

Just buy a gallon of Phosphoric acid off ebay. Much stronger. That's the chemical in cola that dissolves rust, but it's very dilute.

Probably not as cheap as ASDA's 29p for a pint.

Probably dilutes your stomach acid.

If I recall correctly it's exactly as cheap as Asda - but thanks for the heads up. Think a trip to the shops is in order... no matter that they'll think I have a vinegar fetish...
