Rode about 45 miles to birmingham yesterday on the GN250 using the M54 and M6. Bike was on top form, even managed 92mph tailgating a bright yellow Transit, pissed about in birmingham with my mate for about 2 hours on the bike, then had dinner at his then went to go home. Filled up with petrol, sat on my bike, start her up and the engine is making a slight ticker-ticker-ticker noise that was coming from the engine, it got faster as the revs went up. There were no extra vibrations and even my friend could hear it... we laughed and joked about how it wouldnt get me back home and GUESS WHAT HAPPENED!!!

Tailgating a lorry at 55mph for super-mega fuel economy the bike died for a second like it was running out of fuel, and at this point I had my earphones in so I couldnt hear SHIT... then it went fine again... cue a minute later, bike cut out again, THEN rev counter dropped immidiately to 0, and I mean immediately and the back wheel locks up... cue me skidding in a straight line for a second and a half then the engine come back to life, but on its last legs... full throttle I was losing speed about 5mph per second so I pulled into the hard shoulder and the engine conked out straight away... helmet off, headphones out, press starter, Fuck all. Lights bright, indicator is working. Engine had siezed solidafter half hour, managed to get her started but DAMN she sounded nasty... very rattly, almost like the tappets were way out of adjustment, Check the oil level, I had to tilt the bike a good 20degrees to the side of the sight to even see anything but the thing is, the bike hasnt been leaking oil, she doesnt smoke at all... So guys, I ask you, WHAT THE FUCK?! I daren't touch the bike it sounds that nasty

When did you last check the oil level?

All bikes burn a little oil, if enough time passes between checking the oil level it will get so low that it causes the engine to seize.

If there's no oil start there. How can you tell it's not burning oil? Your riding it. Also stop saying tailgating. Makes you sound like a terribly rider. Sure you didn't put diesel in it?

well if I'm getting diesel for 127.9p a litre, I'm impressed ;D Just checked my reciept to confirm as I can be a numpty at times.
I say tailgating cause that's what it is... It's a stupid thing to do and I do it.

I was thinking that myself, or something along those lines. I'm not expecting it to be fixable... but if on the off chance it is, then YAY!

Just something worth asking, Could it be that the oil pump may be buggered? =/ May be a stupid question, but you're all better at this than me

If you had to tip the bike on its side to see oil through the sight glass then you don't have enough oil. I highly doubt its anything to do with the oil pump.

The tappy noise is a worn top end from oil starvation.

I doubt you'll be able to rescue it tbh. Fill it with oil and see what happens.

Not the news you wanted, but the damamge from oil starvation can never be repaired without new parts I'm affraid.

Sorry, just frantically looking for something to blame, cause a full engine of oil doesnt just disappear in a week and a half... considering out of that week, it wasnt used for 5 days

You say you were doing 90+ on the way to birmingham, how long were you doing that speed for? perhaps your bike does burn a little oil, but the extended high speed riding pushed it over the edge???

Also, thats good going getting 90 outta 250! I'm lucky if i get past 80 on my 350 Sad

I think one of your tappet adjusters has come undone, and been dancing around in the head.

What happened here is, you thrashed the absolute knackers off your bike by riding at a speed it was never designed to go at. This caused it to eat its own engine.

It was probably drinking oil at a fantastic rate as the rings and piston skirts were busy trying to smear themselves against the bore. You don't always see it as smoke.

It's a well recognised problem. Happens a lot, particularly with small capacity, aircooled bikes. My Fiancee's done it twice to a GPz305.

Trashing a bike for 70 miles along a motorway flat out, slip streaming a transit, pushing the limits up, and holding them there like riding down a really long steep hill above normal top speed for HOW LONG!?!
Do you REALLY need to look much further for the REAL cause of failure here?!
spannermonkey91 wrote:

So, you didn't check the oil before your long journey to Brumbleton?
You heard nasty noises, when you went to wend your way back from the confudled city..... but STILL didn't check the oil?
You thrashed it there mercilessly.
You thrashed it back...
But HEY, in 200 miles of THRASHING you are perplexted that it MIGHT have consumed what LITTLE oil MIGHT have been left since you last checked it?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Come on, matey!

Man up... you were a tit, and didn't check the oil! Then thrashed it on a long journey, STILL without checking the oil, so why wonder why it siezed, and why look for spuriouse components in the engine to 'blame'..... cause was..... you were a bit of a tit and didn't check the oil!

Yes mike, I accept I'm to blame.
The 92mph bit was only for 30 secs...
everything else was between 70-80 on the clocks... it's about 50miles from mine to brum, not 80 lol
but yes... I know I'm to blame.
Just to learn from this, isnt it cause by something called "Ring flutter"?

No, that's a phenomona usually experienced on old air cooled two stroke twins, with drum brakes or early chrome discs, particularly when fitted with EO Japlop tyres.
The symptoms of Ring Flutter are usually identiied by mothers or partners when laundering the smalls.....
The Radial tyre and improvements in sintered brake pad technology have almost entirely radicated the syndrome, on all but a small number of modern motorcycles.........
Though it can still occur.... most often around this time of year, on machines that have been layed up over the winter.......
