Hi people, im nathan, new to this particular forum so thought i'd pose a question and any answers you might would be great.

I ride a restored 1981 yamaha xt250 and was wondering if there are any modern slip on exhausts that I could treat the bike with, is it possible/easy/even worth it?

Thanks!

I looked on ebay and found this

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YAMAHA-XT250-XT-250-FMF-POWER-CORE-4-EXHAUST-SLIP-ON-/230773243375?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35bb283def#ht_1451wt_758

You would need to rejet the carb to compensate for this free-flowing 'silencer'

There is a UK importer but I am not sure if Rush Racing still exists or not

Hey! Sweet looking exhaust but unfortunately looks like that would only fit the post 2000 models, damn. Thanks anyway though.

The bikes got good low end power and torque i know thats where most of the power is supposed to be for a bike like this, but was just wondering if theres anything I could do to give it a bit more top end!
Do you think im asking to much of a 31 year old bike? It hits 60mph fine but it just feels like the engine could do a bit more but wont.. What do you think?

It's nice classic XT mate! No modern aftermarket exhaust is going to give you much worth having over the exhaust you have now. A say 2mm bigger header pipe might gain a fraction more performance, but no slip on will.

If you want to get it going a bit faster then there's only two real options:
1, If you can get a 270-280cc big bore kit for it? You used to be able to get BB kits for the XT and DR350 models, and the KL250/ KLR, so there might be something available for your bike or a conversion using a different piston from another machine etc.

2, Pay to have pro job done of porting and skimming the head, and possibly looking to see if you can get slightly bigger valves in there, or have the cam re-profiled to a slightly more agressive profile if the engine can stand another 500rpm or so over std.

Much depends on how you're going to use her. My old XT500 was quite happy going over 60 with knobblies like yours but it scared the s**t out of me.
If you want something for bouncing over the English countryside then increasing top end will lose the low down grunt which this model lacks to start with, if metalled roads are your bag then get shot of the knobblies.
Why go with the slip on if the bike's been 'restored', as you're already achieving a not unhealthy speed for this beast I won't recommend sprockets as they've probably already been uprated.

Ah was just a general query really! Not too fussed bout getting much more out of her, 60-65mphs fine for me, was just wondering what my options are. I'm happy wih how quick it is off the line which is perfect really for my city riding ( commuting to and back from work etc!)

Sometimes I forget it's a 30 year old 250 and I should treat it as such Smile.

P.s I've ALWAYS wanted to ride an xt500.. They look great and sound amazing, how long'd you have it for? Wasn't it only 27bhp as well? Not a lot of 500s that you could ride on a restricted license.. Thanks.

Gandalf123 - Xt500 was a beautiful beast but I sold her a couple of months back. Had a 1980 250 and 1978 500 together for about a year and they looked the mutts nuts parked up side by side.

The kickstart was an interesting affair!! I bruised the sole of my foot several times, twisted my knee and even managed to bust the peg off, If you didn't get it right first time she'd make you suffer for it.
Had to laugh when I sold it, the chap went off not being able to start her, he just tickled the lever with his foot but wouldn't commit to one swift stroke. Reckoned he could learn when he got home, still wonder if he ever got the balls to kick her properly and just how many times she's chucked him over the bars into the garage wall Rolling Eyes

Hahaha your not fucking wrong about the kickstart, theres definitely a knack to it. Brought a little rubber for the end of the lever of yambits though a while ago and it changed my life.. I don't know if they were hard to kick over when they were new but those little rubbers should be standard :p
