don't ignore anymore. my problem is not fixed
trying to run some programs from the command line. things that usually work like notepad, ping etc do not run
checked my environment variables.

if i type in the address then all is well. i.e "C:\Windows\system32\notepad.exe" or "C:\Windows\System32\ping"

when i type path into command line it gives me a list of paths C:\Windows\; C:\Windows\System32\; etc
not sure what is going on here

EDIT: managed to get some programs working by adding the paths through the command line. notepad and regedit now works. ping etc still doesn't work however unless i enter the full address

It does sound like there's something wrong with your env variables - when you type path (or echo %PATH%) are you definitely getting C:\windows\system32\; as one of the entries?

You probably know this already but all the PATH variable does is tell the OS where to look for executables. If it can't find an executable in the first directory, it'll check subsequent dirs until it finds what it's looking for.

If you've got it partly working by adding paths in the cmd, the next cmd session you fire up will revert to the previous settings. You'd need to edit the variables through My computer -> properties -> Advanced -> Env Vars for it to set globally.

Ahh, good old Windows as the oh so user friendly character spacing Smile I've got into the habit of using an underscore in my naming conventions so it can't go wrong!

what appears to have happened is one of the java or c compilers had overwritten the environment variables. when i added all the variables back at the command line it only added the variables for the current prompt session.
when i went into computer> advanced properties>system variables>environment variables the java developmnet kit was placed in a directory that had a space in it, i then put quote marks around it like so "%ProgramFiles%/jdk 1.6.5;"
i then proceeded to separate the multiple environment variables with a semi colon which i put inside the quote marks, where they should have been outside the quote marks like this: "%ProgramFiles%/jdk 1.6.5";
