What a joke this new ruling is! Article.

It is discrimination, it's basing things on statistics, it god damn common sense. Women live longer that is why it cost more for life assurance, younger female drivers are less likely to crash than young male drivers.

It's ridiculous, if you follow their logic then age shouldn't affect insurance, neither should the area you live in.

Total joke. It is a total failure of common sense.

They're totalling avoiding the real issue here:

The British Insurance Brokers' Association says that an 18-year-old man with an average car will pay £4,400 a year, compared with £2,700 charged to an 18-year-old woman.

It's perfectly logical.

For insurance that's 'optional' (i.e not requried by law, e.g life insurance) then use all the statistical analysis you want, generalise as much as you like as I have the choice to simple not have it.

But.

On insurance that I HAVE to have in order to use a car, I want to be judged on MY driving history, not that of others.
Why should a young male driver that has never crashed still have to pay more (all things equal) than a female that has never crashed? They have the same driving history, they both pose the same risk? Yet they have been judged on something they have no control over; in any other situation that is discrimination.

I agree, if they want to force people to be insured, insure the person not the 'demographic'. More paper work for the insurance companies? My heart bleeds Rolling Eyes

You can as they are all things that you can change.

Insurance can be as detailed as they like, broken down by as many risks groups as they can be bothered with. Seems strange that they can use one fairly wide proxy (ie gender) which isn't allowed in pretty much any other area while they ignore loads of other things.

All the best

Keith

Doesn't affect birth certificate so not going to make any difference to insurance.

I don't know anyone who's been asked to provide their birth certificate when making a claim. I suspect sex is just as blaggable as everything else, if you were determined enough.

Arguably, its only right that insurance companies should disciminate on likely risk, but arguably employers should be allowed to disciminate on the basis that women of child bearing age may in the near future disappear for months at a time on full pay.

If society decides employers cant do it, it's about time insurers cant are stopped from offering lower premiums to women.

I'd like to think my premiums will go down as a result but of course actually it will be just that the women's rates will go up to the men's ones.

Fair enough, but if things are that meaningless then basing insurance premiums on them isn't defensible.

For a valid insurance claim, it will be your legal gender status rather than your biological or genetic or birth gender status that matters.

In the UK, the law accepts the ludicrous concept of sex change, and men who have had their dicks chopped off and breast growth stimulated, can legally describe themselves as women and demand to be treated as such, even if they are still genetically men with augmentations and hormone pills. They are just as much women, as a toyota mr2 in a deceptive body kit, is a lamborgini but the law recognises them as women cos the law is an ass.

Quick look and I was wrong. UK law does not even require a sex for someone to legally be regarded as being of their acquired gender.

Which makes it even more ludicrous for insurance reasons.

All the best
