Right, I installed XP on friday and already is playing up. Whenever I boot the machine it locks up half way through startup, if I go into safe mode and uninstall the video card it will then boot as normal. I do have all te latest drivers and there was never a problem with it before I was on XP. Any ideas?

Also, whenever I open a new IE window it opens without the status bar. Just a minor thing, I know, but still an irritation. Again, any ideas?

It's XP. It always has problems.
Just learn to ignore them...

Nope. Xp had the drivers already.

Direct X is installed.

Ok I had a problem when I first installed xp it ran fine, then went to the update page and installed a load of things, restarted and all is still fine, installed direct x9.b or whatever it is and like you basically it would get in to windows then not be happy before fully completing.

Could get in in safe mode so just ensured everything was still backed up and did another clean install.

I haven't tried putting the direct x 9.b back on yet and all has been fine so far.

May be your problem too?

yes i thought so i had the same problem with my card i tried to install with xp drivers!
you need to find the latest drivers from the manufacturer and update the driver to that instead of the xp version but i wouldn't hold your breath as it never worked for me but its worth a go!
other than this its a new card.
xp is crap for drivers and its going to be even worse when longhorn comes out!

I had exactly the same sort of problem with XP when I first installed it couple of months ago, would lock halfway through bootup, even before it had finished installing properly. Anyway turned out it didn't like the IRQ my onboard sound was using, if I disabled or changed it, it booted up fine, but how many hours of tracking down did it take me to find it was that.... Confused Anyway i'm back on ME now, but due to its quirky problems and lack of decent USB support like XP I'm probably going back again.

Another thing with XP was that as soon as I install it, every time I do it immediately infects itself with all these worm viruses and god knows what.

Yeah, I got the blaster worm within 1 minute of being online. I went to the MS site and got the patch and that sorted it tho.

Try disabling Background Intelligent Transfer Service in Control Panel/Admin Tools/Services - you'll also have to STOP the service if its already running, otherwise nothing will change til the next reboot. My XP system used to freeze for anything from 30-90s on attempting any LAN/internet action before I disabled that.

For the status bar problem, double-click "My computer", choose View/Status Bar. Then go to Tools/Folder Options/View, and click 'Apply to All Folders'.

To stop those worm viruses and various other nasty shit:

* Install ALL critical updates for WinXP including DirectX9.0b
* Get AVG 6 (and UPDATE IT!)
* Get Ad-Aware 6 (and UPDATE IT!)
* Get SpyBot Seek & Destroy (and UPDATE IT!)
* Visit fewer porn sites
