Hi all, after it's winter break I've started riding the intruder agin but have had some issues with starting, cutting out whilst riding and throttle causing the engine to die.
I put this down to the fact that it's been sat a while so whipped carb off and cleaned out with carb cleaner and put fresh juice in.
Basically I became aware of a problem when it conked out on me whilst riding to work 3 times last Thursday (By conk out I mean it started not revving when throttle was applied then when coming to a stationary position the engine would cut out). And agin 3 times on teh way home. It wouldn't start at all Friday morning, the on the last dregs of battery it fired up so rode to work and conked out again after about 10 - 15 mins of riding with no problems.
This time it took about 20 mins for it it to start again, which made me start to think that the fuel pump was sticking or faulty in some way. Anyway managed to get it goin and got to work (VERY LATE!).
When I went to leave, same story, wouldn't start at all and nearly killed battery then on the last breath of battery it fired up and seemed fine.
Rode about 3 miles from work and it just cut out, no splutter or misfire just dead!. I left it for another half hour and then killed battery trying to start it and had to walk the bike the 3 miles back to work!
This is when I decided to clean the carb out as I though it may have a blockage in the jets or something. I also took fuel pump off and cleaned this out.
I have now put the carb back on and it starts and idles fine but as soon as you apply throttle the engine bogs down and tries to die UNLESS the choke is about halfway on, regardless of whether it's hot or cold the bike will only rev if the choke is slightly on.
Pulled the plugs out and as expected they were black and sooty due to running on choke.
I have not yet ridden the bike (due to worrying about the cutting out and 3 mile walk thing happening again!) but could do with some advice as to what to try next.
So to recap:
1. Bike tried to cut out when throttle applied and died whilst riding
2. Carb removed, cleaned and re-fitted
3. Fuel pump removed tested and re-fitted
4. Fresh fuel put in, old fuel removed.
5. Bike now idles fine but still tries to die when using throttle unless choke is about halfway on.
Any ideas much appreciated guys as this is doing my nut in!
