PostPosted: 23:22 - 14 Mar 2011    Post subject: Small CC bike - Tyre choices? Reply with quote

Just browsing some sites for tyres as I have no clue which tyres are good for the bike I now own (cb100n).

The tyre size is apparantly 2.75 R18 48P on the front, and 3 R17 50P on the rear.

I've searched quite a few sites and cant find many tyres in those sized, apart from this site (clicky) which is also the one I got the sizes from.

I know a few of you guys have smaller CC bikes, and therefore know which tyres are good, which are bad.

I don't know what tyre's are on the bike, as I'm picking it up wednesday so hopefully they're decent enough to warrant not changing them straight away..

Any recommendations?

Do you want 'good' tyres or 'cheap' tyres?
Sizes aren't uncommon, its pretty much the standard for small commuters, though 3.00F 3.25R is a little more common on newer models. Using 3.00's both ends used to be quite common on a lot of lightweights, too. May be an option if you struggle finding the narrower 2.75's.
BUT, if you want cheap tyres, plenty on ebay... in them sort of sizes, usually less than £20 a hoop.... probably harder than a hard thing, in an angry mood, with about as much grip as a compulsive gambler on a tenner in a bookies..... but get you through an MOT.
For 'good tyres'.... Wheel house at Water Orton. Dot on the map puts you a bit North of me, but dont know how far. But used to be one of the more favoured tyre emporiums of the brummie biker.... got a pair of Mitchellins (not pilots) not sure what the product code is, for Snowies Pup, those exact sizes..... £70... they are deliciousely soft.... but as yet untried!

Pirelli city demons ftw

I lashed out the extra £7 for a set of those for my last GS.

Soo much better than the ones that were on before. Can't remember but these off epic grip for my fat ass in the rain. Only ever slipped 4-5 times I can remember (not including snow and ice).

Pushing it hard leant over round a downhill bend etc.

Nottingham, just off Junction 26.

I want good tyres and don't mind what price (although I realise that most tyres will probably be no more than £40 each depending on brand). I want something that's grippy and soft, but will give decent mileage (I don't mind if I have to replace once a year, I'm predicting I'll do maybe 8-9k miles at most in the time I ride this beast lol).

Hang on, just re read that.
Are you SURE that the back wheel is 17"?
If so, I think I'd be looking on e bay, pretty sure that the CG wheel fits the 100N... that would give 18" rim and better tyre choice.

this site says it is, but tbh I thought to myself it's a bit odd that the rear would be 17" and the front 18"... Laughing

I have a copy of the workshop manual and it doesn't say anything in there regarding tyre size, havent managed to get a copy of the haynes book yet though.

[edit]
Hmm... Would seem it is a 17" rear wheel, as this specification site also states it.

Bugger the 'specs', go look at whats ON the bike!
Probably is, but you should never bank on it!
Check out the CG wheel Idea, I'm SURE that the CB100N frame is the same as the earlier CB125S, which with revised push rod engine became the CG125... hence, good chance that a CG wheel would fit your swing arm and line up with the sprockets, and let you fit 18" wheel for better tyre choice and price.
IF some one hasn't already, either for that, or MOT tester took objection to rusty spokes, and a CG wheel was easier and cheaper to find than a CB100 one.....

This one's bidding at a fiver... says fits H100 as well as CG.

a pair, with 'legal' tyres, £50...
Could be a useful upgrade, and if you got a wheel or wheels with tyres chucked in?
Could make life easier.
Would have to check the sproket sizes though. Your rear sproket will be 'tall' to turn smaller wheel faster..... on bigger wheel it'll raise the gearing by about 5%.

Both wheels should be 17 inch. Tyres 2.75/17 front and 3.00/17 rear. Vee Rubber tyres are cheap and work well on this type of bike. Been using them on the RXS for a while, since Golden Boy and Double Coin become more difficult to get.

Absolutely no point buying brand name tyres - waste of money on a small commuter, trust me.

Just checked and yes, some places do list the front as 18 inch. Odd. But a 2.75/18 tyre will cost about the same and you can obviously see what size is actually on the bike.

I'm picking it up tomorrow so will definitely check when I get home what the tyre size is.. If CG wheels do indeed fit, it will make it a lot easier looking for them if I need a wheel at any point (although would like to keep my disc brake at the front.. Cool lol). I know the cb100n shares a lot with the cb125 as the workshop manual states pretty much everything bar the engine is the same, or just slightly different between the models.

Why would you say that? I'm not looking to put my knee down or anything like that, but I was looking for something which is going to keep me happy and stuck to the tarmac regardless of weather, especially in the wet.

On my moped my Bridgestone tyres that were on there didn't and I felt like I was going round on the plastic wheels you get on kids toys.

Im going to have to disagree with that one. I fitted me22 Metzelers to my rxs and they were a vast improvement over the crappy non branded tyres that were previously fitted, a hell of a lot more confidence.

They look better aswell

me22's ftw

I say that because it's a fact Laughing I've used Dunlop, Metzeler and Michelins on the RXS - and they were if anything worse than the cheap stuff (Michelin made the bike handle horrible - and yes, I had the right size and type fitted, Dunlop front was dangerous in the wet, worse tyre I've ever had on the RXS).

Vee Rubber tyres work great, grip in the wet, last better than most budget stuff. Golden Boy are also excellent but quite difficult to find.

Some budget tyres are crap, obviously - avoid Duro, in particular. And anything else they see fit to put on Chinese bikes Shocked

[edit]

£44 for a front tyre for a small commuter Shocked What is this crazy talk Laughing

If they make them in your sizes, Michelin Pilot Sportys are fantastic. Thumbs Up
