I have a Suzuki DRZ400E, it's a 2000 model. This is what it looked lie when I got it a couple of years ago.

Although it's taxed and insured for the road, apart from the odd trip to the petrol station, it spends 99.9% of it's time on the local mountain dirt tracks near to my house. (Yes those in the background!)

A couple of weeks ago I treated the DRZ to a new FMF Powercore 4 silencer. Silencer in this case being an oxymoron, it was rather loud and shooting a nice flame out of the back, with the spark arrestor removed.
It only took about 20 minutes to install the muffler. Only problem I had fitting it was the spacer which holds the muffler away from the frame, it just seemed too long. I managed to fit one 5mm shorter, it still clears the rear wheel so no problems.
A brief foray into the local scenery revealed that the throttle response felt a bit better but I was getting almost constant backfiring on the overrun.

Anyway here it is fitted:-

My winter fuel payment is due, now winter's over, (work that one out), so I thought, what the hell I'll order the powerbomb header pipe as well. I ordered it on the Sunday night, it arrived here in Cyprus on Wednesday.

That's bloody good going, so I should say thank you to "Dirt Bike Bitz" for a very speedy transaction!
I fitted the Powerbomb this morning, that only took about 20 minutes as well. I had been dosing the exhaust studs with easing oil all week so I got them off relatively easily. The only problem is they are very difficult to get to.

Here it is fitted:-

A more prolonged journey into the local undergrowth, this afternoon, revealed that the Powerbomb has reduced the noise level quite considerably. More importantly it has significantly increased the throttle response and increased low down pulling power, in fact it was spinning the back wheel with the merest whiff of throttle through all the gears. I can see that's going to catch me out sometime! The pipes are all stainless! The only thing I don;t like about the exhaust is that 'orrible clamp holding the pipes together, it'll have to go!

Before ordering the exhaust parts, I had got some new plastics, side panels, radiator shrouds, and an RMZ450 mudguard.
I had to drill a couple of new holes in the mudguard to get it to fit, and also had to use 4 washers as spacers to push it away from the radiators, works fine though and is a darn sight nicer than the previous owners canoe paddle, that he'd been using as a mudguard. Managed to get some discounted graphics for it as well on Ebay.

Here's how it looked today after getting back from annoying the wildlife!

The bike already had the 3 x 3 mod done when I got it.
It also has an aftermarket headstock.
Apart from all the normal servicng, oil, air filter plug, tyres, brakes etc. last year I:-
Set the race sag and adjusted the shocks and forks accordingly.
Replaced the ACCT with an MCCT.
Managed to remove and replace the bodged timing cover plug.
Replaced the rear sprocket bolts.
Replaced standard front sprocket with a 13 tooth one and thread locked it in place.
Replaced the standard rear brake master cylinder, (inherently crap), with a new Honda CRF450 unit, (it bolts straight on).
Replaced seat cover from scratch.
Added some case savers, and smoothed off the sharp edges on the gear lever.
Installed my postage stamp number plate. Mr. Green

Shortly I'll be replacing the bark busters, and grips, I'm probably going to ditch the headlights and go with just a number board.
I will be replacing the fork seals soon, as the left hand side is leaking.
In the longer term I'm going to replace the stator and if funds allow it I'd like to get the kick start kit for it as well.

3 x 3 Mod = removing the snorkel from the airbox then enlarging the hole to 3 x 3inch. Presumably it encourages more airflow, it had already been done when I got it so I'm stuck with it!

Thanks and it is a good place for off-roading, although it does have it's drawbacks.
There is no mud, even in the winter! All the trails are hard packed rocks, ranging from limestone to granite, with a bit of gravel thrown in for good measure.

Similar to this:-

https://www.southerntrails.co.uk/gallerys/jan_feb_2010/images/DSC04040.jpg

Not only is the ground extremely unforgiving, if you bin it, I can murder a set of knobblies in a couple of weekends!
Although a lot of the trails are just mountain tracks, they are technically still public highways. You're not going to get nicked, but there is always the possibility that you'll meet someone coming the other way, so you have too keep your eyes peeled.

Because these tracks are in barren, rocky, uninhabited, places it is the preferred habitat for the local snake poulation, the nastiest is the "Blunt nosed viper", very difficult to spot in that sort of terrain, they are relatively rare though. There is however a healthy population of "Whip snakes", they are harmless to humans, but I've seen a couple of whoppers, 3 meters long. The Whip snakes predate on the vipers!

The only other drawback is the heat in the summer, 38 - 40 degrees is not uncommon, even this high up, (roughly 600m above sea level).
The "E" has no fans on the radiators so it struggles in the height of summer. I've got a couple of fans, from the BMW I stripped, so i might look at shoe horning them in!
