We have just had it confirmed that my husband has a new job in australia, with visa sponsorship for both of us and relocation package from the UK.
However due to costs we are going to be selling our bikes before we go out there, and then get new bikes when we get there - some fantastic roads to play on when we get out there and some fantastic weather to ride in as well.

If anyone has done the move before all information is greatly received.

Another cheerful note about that part of the world is that 10 of the most venomous snakes in the world live there Smile Laughing

BE WARNED: funnel-web spiders are on the march across the Central Coast.

The Australian Reptile Park issued the warning this week.

The park's Mary Raynor said there had been a boom in the local funnel-web population.

Recent heavy rains and high humidity have resulted in a significant increase in the numbers of the highly venomous spiders.

"The influx is due to unseasonable dampness which means the male is out and about looking for a mate," Ms Raynor said.

"So be aware and alert. Don't leave clothing, towels or footwear on the ground for spiders to hide in, check shoes before putting them on, and encourage children not to go barefoot in the backyard."

The increase in funnel-webs is good news, however, for the park's anti-venom program.

The spiders can be carefully caught using a smooth-sided glass container and dropped off at the park at Somersby.

Where are you going? We went to Brisbane in March 2008, and returned after a year as it wasn't what we hoped for.

Prepare for awful cops, terrible supermarkets, fairly closed minded & conservative society, fantastic weather and great roads (shame about the cops hiding with their radar guns all over the place). Depends on what you want from life, but it wasn't for us.

Great coffee tho, and playgrounds for kids are fantastic. Beer and wine is shite, however, unless you like the local muck.

Cars and bikes are very expensive 2nd hand too. I could go on...

EDIT:

See this thread for the upside...

I was there for a year and couldn't agree more with this.

The problem with Australia is that so many Brits head there, one of the major reasons to escape this country is to escape it's inhabitants, the type that go to Aus are usually only one step away from those that head for southern France, Spain and Cyprus.

Hi

Was in Aus for about 3 months with work too many years ago.

Watch out for the speed traps, and even more so watch out for drivers who are asleep as they dawdle along slowly. New cars and bikes were cheaper than the UK, but held their value far better making them more expensive 2nd hand. In Victoria rego (their VED equivalent) was FAR more than in the UK, but insurance was far cheaper.

Prices varied for other things. Food wasn't cheap but eating out was cheap. Supermarkets seemed to be aimed at the grotty end of the scale, but sold the food so fine by me. Clothes were expensive. Chocolate didn't taste so good (presume additives to stop it melting so easily), but then they did sell decent size bars of Old Jamaica chocolate which compensates.

All the best

Keith

We are going to be in the North Sydney area.

We have looked into the cost of trasnferring both our bikes compared with buying once over there and buying over there currently is quite good value compared to what we would have to do to get the bikes transfered over including the cleaning of every nook and cranny, the import taxes etc.

We have friends already living in the sydney area, so wont be totally alone out there. We have also been out there a few times so know what to expect etc. We arent planning on cutting our ties completely with the UK as we will be renting our house out in the first instance.

Hi

As far as I know getting an import to comply with Australian Design Rules would be pretty difficult, although at least UK headlights point the right way.

Bike I had in Aus cost about 50% more than the same bike would have done in the UK (and the UK one would probably have less miles on it). Rego was about Aus$400 I think (about 5 times the UK VED at the time). But my full comp insurance in Aus was about half the cost of my UK tpft, despite full no claims on the UK policy and non on the Aus policy (plus a UK license so the cheaper Aus companies wouldn't insure me).

I was only in Sydney for one weekend (for the car and bike show).

All the best

Keith

No the problem is that there are too many damn Australians living there. I wish they'd all live at sea instead so I could visit their country and enjoy it without the constant "G'day Deano" gibberish heard in the background.
