Or Motorcycle Action group.

I was going to join until I found out who the local representative is and changed my mind.

However I just wondered what they are all about.

I don't even know who my local rep is... but I agree with what they do. They basically advocate for the motorcyclist to the Government and European parliament. They are about the only people who will stick up for our rights in any way.

I just joined the national organisation. Costs £20 per year and you get a membership card and a monthly rag sent to your door. The magazine is a little bit "Chicken Little" ("The sky is falling!!") but it has the odd interesting read. I don't really care about the magazine though, as I just want to support the Motorcycle Action Group.

Ok, so you don't ride bikes then?

I'd say they fight for the rights of ALL motorcyclists. Yeah sure so a lot of them are a bit 'beardy' and like choppers, but I don't see you lobbying government against dangerous and ill conceived bike legislation.

They saved us against leg protectors, they saved us from a 100bhp power limit (so far) and they saved us from having to register anything with two wheels and an engine including mini motos, race bikes etc etc.

They do good work, and they stick up for ALL motorcyclists.

Hmm, MAG group events all seem to be all Easter egg runs, camping trips and AGMs. B-b-b-bad to the b-b-b-bone.

Did they save us or did the government not bother with implementing these laws?

They successfully brought a campaign against leg protectors in the eighties, putting forward genuine research that showed that leg protectors would not have a beneficial effect on safety. They organised protests and rallies, and lobbied parliament.

Similarly they promoted awareness of the bill that would include registration of all powered two wheeled vehicles, for road use or not and pointed out that it would be unenforcable and impossible to administer, but the MP involved still put it forward as a private members bill. The MAG lobbied other MP's to turn up to parliament for the reading of the bill in order to prevent it from becoming law. This was successful. Had MAG not been involved, no bugger would have turned up to the reading of the bill, meaning it would almost become law by proxy.

I can't actually understand people's cynicism in this case, because the MAG do actually look out for us and the government don't. I certainly trust a bunch of beardy bikers a darn sight more than I trust ANY government.

I see, well it seems they do it for themselves mainly, but since we also bike, it is a good cause to have such a strong group trying to keep biking free as possible from law.

Think they can get all bus lanes sorted? Very Happy

They aren't supposed to be bad to the bone. They aren't a patch club, they are a motorcycling lobby group. They are supposed to be the acceptable face of motorcycling.

Yes.

However, they didn't just do that stuff for themselves, they did it so that YOU could ride your bike without having to have gigantic foam leg protectors on the sides. They did it so that you can legally own a mini moto or racebike that doesn't have to be registered or display a number plate (Rossi would have to have had a number plate during the British GP). They don't do it for the hell of it, they do it so people like you and me can ride bikes as people have been doing for a hundred or so years, without excessive government intervention.

They also campaign for the repeal of the helmet law, but thats kind of a symbolic campaign these days as I doubt it will ever happen.

I don't mind MAG.

I've hung out with a few MAG-ish types in my time, and they aren't all beardy or real-aley. And certainly whilst some of them may have arcane ideas about decoration of their vehicles, they're not all "choppery" either (an entirely different animal, LOL)

I'm still matey with quite a few of them; I suppose its not changed so much from when I first started going: back then, you could just find out where the meetings were being held and turn up, listen in, ask questions and get involved.

... but so long as you don't let "the politics" get to you, then they are usually a fun and sociable bunch, and when I used to go, they had things like "let's all go to the pub and write letters to our MPs about [whatever]", aside from the easter egg rides or whatever. Its about what you want to get involved in, if you have an idea, put it to them, you never know they may well consider it and take it up (or argue about it for five months before doing anything about it) Laughing

MAG are alright. They can be whatever you want it to be. You can be earnest and be in the frontline to fight for rights (that's what those "No to the Westminster Parking Tax" guys that annoy everybody in Trafalgar Square on Wednesdays are all about ), or you can go along and give support, or man a stall at a rally.

Their rallies are usually pretty good, well organised.

Anyone remotely interested in MAG should learn about Fred Hill.
Its kinda inspirational.
(if I ever admitted to things inspiring me, which is rare)
Who is Fred Hill?

MAG are good people, they look after the interests of all of us, whether you realise it or not.

Think of them as the union for bikers; if you have a biker specific problem then, providing it's universal enough and you can come up with a cogent argument, MAG will support you and have the clout to mobilise the troops.

They don't always win and it can take a long time, but they often come up with a good compromise, that is for the benefit of all.

OP, I'm also curious as to what's wrong with your local rep?

80's Kelly McGillis vs Now Kelly McGillis:

https://www.topgunday.com/wp-content/uploads/top-gun-kelly-mcgillis.jpg

I'm not against MAG, it's good that we have a voice at the table - even if it's adenoidal and mumbling through a beard - I just can't get remotely enthusiastic about them. "Victory Or Compromise!" isn't a cry I feel minded to rally around.

You'd rather rally around Victory or death?

Being a biker is not about being a badass is it? Its about enjoying your motorcycle which you won't be able to do without people like the MAG.

Care to suggest an alternative lobbying group to help motorcyclists out? The BMF?

Well, the BMF refused to condemn satellite speed control of motorcycles, so that makes them effective and useful doesn't it?

MAG may not be THE most effective lobbying group in the world, but they are the only one we've got who will stick up for our rights. What do you care ZRX, you live in the US anyway.
