Right, I reckon I can get the old chat script fixed and working properly on the new forum, but some of the more trillian-obsessed people have voiced opposition.

My case for live chat:
It's easy, more people will use it, it works through firewalls (when it works, anyway), and it doesn't need an IRC client or any Java nonsense.

I'm sure one of the trillianites will make the case for IRC in about 10 minutes.

So, do you want me to try and get web based chat working and plugged back into the forum - or does everybody just want to use IRC?

Nobody mention the karma, I've fixed the damn karma.

Hi

Personally I prefer the forum based chat room. Easier to just pop in and out of.

But only if it works under Opera.

All the best

I say someone hosts this:
https://cgiirc.sourceforge.net/

demo here:
https://cgiirc.sourceforge.net/demo/ or: https://cgiirc.uk.blitzed.org/

It has the features that korn lists, but still connects to IRC so those that prefer more flexibility have it.
Also some people can use irc when they can't go to web pages (not me.. I can't do either at work Neutral).

I believe it is fairly easily skinable, so it could be made to 'fit in'.

Only prob is that it's a pearl script that does uses (relatively) a fair bit of processor power I believe.

IRC is far better for me and a few other people (Syfoon, for one) as we already use IRC on other servers, so we can just have mIRC connect to another IRC server, and chat away in there!

jPilot isn't hard to use, I'm sure everyone can get their head around using jPilot if you put that in place of the "Live Chat".

That's my very very feeble case for IRC anyhow!

Just noticed what G's written above - I agree completly with that. People can use mIRC or Trillycrap to access the IRC channel, or they can access it using cgiirc from the site. Also, cgiirc does not have the problems of the ports being blocked at peoples workplaces.

cgiirc is a web interface, it does not use java, for all the browser knows it's a normal website - you will have no problems with it if IRC ports are blocked.

IRC ports are blocked where I work - cgiirc works fine.

That was my point Razz

How the hell does it connect to an IRC server on port 8080, it doesn't matter what interface it is... the IRC server you are connecting to only broadcasts the data on a specific port(s) ie 6667, 6668... and so on, so therefore the firewall has to allow data through those ports and if it doesn't then you are screwed either way, whatever interface you use web based or not. Correct me if I'm wrong. Smile

I would say use a live chat although I have no problems with IRC on here, just don't have the proper program to see what people write. E.G

When I use the IRC, I open it straght from that link and not through a program If that's what I need to do.

A live chat would be easier I guess, don't think it would need a huge amount of moderators to keep an eye out for things getting out of hand but then again it's you lot so I think we would need one. Razz I'm sure you lot can look out for yourselves etc.

Saying that I don't know anything about IRC compared with any other chat room.

One or the other I'm not particularly fussy. But I'd prefer a live chat TBH.

I believe the point is that cgiirc runs on the web server and it's the server does the connecting to IRC. The app then generates plain web pages which are served to the user, and this will get to people who have the irc ports blocked. Like me at work.

That is also why it's so server intensive.

You need Trillian to see all that. There's a cracked copy doing the rounds, ask G next time you're in the chatroom cos he's got a link to it.

I remember reading a post about Trillian. Loads of codes or something.

And I downloaded Trillian too, but wasn't completely sure how it worked.
I've still got the install file If someone wants to help me how to use it.

I'm with him on this one.... It's ok to use IRC in the evenings, but using the old chat on here used to be fun during the day.. eh Kris!?

BCF CHAT PLEASE KORN!!!....

Does it matter if we have both running?? It's not a case of either/or is it?? I'm sure we will all find each other somewhere in digital space!!!

and it will save my GPRS data as I won't have to use my phone to log onto IRC during the day!!

I should probably mention, G used my login to vote for IRC.

Personally I don't really care as I rarely use chat. Although the sounds IRC makes are pretty annoying/gay. Razz

I agree Razz.

IRC is like any web-based form of chat, without the stupid people.

Except on EFnet/DALnet. Seems like they're big, huge idiot magnets.

As well as warez/porn magnets, but I wouldn't know about that kinda stuff... : - P
