Just wondering what disc locks people use on a daily basis, I currently have a £10 basic disc lock but looking to replace it with something more well known, and hopefully more secure than something which looks like a pin hammer could break.

Been looking at a few, although right now cant afford more than around £30 for a disc lock, until I can sort out some cash then looking at replacing it with something more substantial (possibly Oxford Monster lock or an Oxford Boss alarmed lock)

Hein Gericke have been trying to pimp out this lock for a while. I am tempted it's just the the fact that the nearest one to me is an hour away. Sorry I can't vouch for it's quality.

I've got an oxford omega disc lock. Knocked 20quid off my insurance renewal and cost me £25quid from infinity (york). I think it should've been 35-40quid but mine was in the older style box and was knocked down in price.

https://c0.dmlimg.com/1fc1c1c2db5852e08ffc380475e263368b033464addb97b30b9b5fa58269f73e.jpg

Shopping around you should be able to get it sub £30. It's small enough to fit in your pocket, but big enough to give the impression it's sturdy. How tough it actually is though I have no idea. No one has attempted to steal my bike thus far, although that may say more about my bike than the security that's protecting it.

I dont like oxford stuff! Their disc lock that i had was very brittle! A guy tried to nick my ped some time ago by shattering then lock body with a hammer! At that point i could see how porous the casting was! Oxford boss has an open shackle meaning that somebody can crop it!

I got a motrax vishas. Thacham approved with a double locking barrel and forged lock body. To back that up I use a xena xr1 disc lock alarm. Battery lasts 3 months in the cold.

Get the best of both by getting a xena xx14. People have rated them.

In short, avoid oxford!

I got this one:

https://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_227265_langId_-1_categoryId_165752

Its brilliant, no weak spots at all.

And the best thing is that I got it brand new on eBay because the listing was spelt wrong. Ching ching!

Theres a few on there now actually for about £20. Deffo worth considering.

To be fair tot, my main criteria for a disc lock was the little thatcham/sold secure stickers. In the real world they mean naff all, but in the land of insurance brokers, they're good for a few quid off. Just renewed my insurance for the third year running and so far I've had around 20-30quid knocked off for that little silver jobby. Thats's a minimum of 60quid saved and a net gain of 35-50quid.

I asked them about putting further physical insurance on the bike and they said it's a good idea, but as the physical security box is already ticked on their forms, it wont lead to any more discounts. I guess if I had a valuable bike, I'd be concerned.

I use a Xena disc lock, got a slightly more splayed design that makes it look more hefty even if it isn't.......

..... that said though I also use 2 chains, a Cat 1 alarm immobilizer and a ground anchor in a locked garage just to be sure, but if push came to shove I would imagine that the disc lock would probably be the thing that would thwart any prospective thieves! Wink

I got one of these:

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220577449145&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_2540wt_1139

Probably not the safest, but 95% of the time my bike is either outside my bedroom window or in a secure quad at work, so I just wanted the cheapest alarmed disc lock I could get.

One of the advantages of an alarmed disc lock is that it's practically impossible to try and drive off without removing it, as you'd trigger the alarm before doing any damage.

I have a Krall 16mm 1.5m chain and lock which I use at home, but when out I don't tend to take it with me as it weighs the same as a small house..

My old man uses oxford stuff, and the insurance companies swear by it knocking price off hence me looking at stuff. I'd seen the Xena locks (XR1 on ebay) and they seemed decent, I was just interested in getting one with an alarm so that if anyone moved my bike, it would hopefully get them noticed..

Do their batteries really only last around 4-6months? I cba buying batteries every few months if thats the case.. Confused

I had a Hein Gericke disc lock - electronic fault within 24hrs (of it just sitting on my bike in garage). Got an Abus RS2 now, feels a lot chunkier and I'm a lot happier with it. You really do get what you pay for.

That oxford omega is virtually identical to the motrax vishas so it's a good sizeable lock! You notice how substantial the lock body is. Look at the other cheaper disk locks and realise that it would be very easy to crimp together and crack the casting - it's exactly what happened to mine. Abus' locks are very heft too.

motrax vishas is the best one. Many of the cheap ones look strong but can be broken. It's £45 inc delivery but you would lose more than that if you get your bike gets nicked so buy a decent one for gods sake.

I use a huge Xena alarmed disc lock, its a bit old so not sure what its called.

Its got a loud as hell alarm (which is really annoying when it sometimes sets off in my topbox) and has a double locking system, basically the pin locks itself in, preventing the lock just being wedged open. Very Happy

Ok,

So from the choice of either the Oxford Omega, or the Motrax Vishas, which one would you guys pick?

The Motrax is £8 more expensive than the Oxford, and I cant really see much difference for the buck.

You won't 'see' much difference and that's the problem. But much Oxford stuff is quite cheaply made to be honest. I really think the Vishas one is basically unbreakable, and that's it's job.

You'll also keep it for a good few years so long term it will be good value for money.

edit

ps many of the 'alarm' ones are shite cos the speaker can be pierced by a screwdriver (thus rendering it silent).

Alright guys, seen alot of mentions for the motrax vishas being the disc lock to have.. Unfortunately it doesn't have an alarm which would be a big plus for me..

What do you reckon getting a vishas and also a cheaper alarmed lock? I've seen a 110 db disc lock on ebay for 11.99, which looks like it would do the job of making noise, but not sure if it would be substantial enough on it's own..would this be a good idea or pointless?

The vishas ticks the same security box as my almax series 3 for insurance, so it'd be perfect when leaving the bike parked up but not having the almax with me..as it'd comply with stated security measures for the insurance..Cheers Thumbs Up

That would be a good solution - I run the vishas and XR-1 on mine. Any cheap alarm will do as a deterrent. I'm not to sure about the battery life for the cheap ones. Even then, it'll be a lot cheaper than say a Xena XX-14.

The vishas DOES weigh about 1 kg though, but it's pretty nice and solid.

it seems like a good idea to me but i jw if anyone could see a downside that would make it pointless..

Means there is a second lock for a theif to shift.. But also if it's being taken in a van the alarm would be going off if i got two, and i'd be closeby Twisted Evil

the weight sounds good, will give my arm a little workout each time i take it on and off.. Which wouldn't hurt.. Was a nightmare shifting the bike into the garage!

Cheers Thumbs Up

Yeah, with a disk lock, there's nothing to stop a thief from hoisting it into a van. But it will stop opportunist thieves.

The thing that the vishas has in it its favour is the bulk! You can't get a set of clamps around the body to crush the lock. And because it is forged, it's not going to be as brittle as those cheapo oxford jobbies.

The lock barrel itself is double locking, so you can't just push the pin to lock it onto the disk, you physically have to jiggle your key into there and manipulate the lock. You can't really drill it out either!

One tip with any double locking bolt, make sure you lube it! WD40 works well in winter. The last thing you want is to find your disc lock has seized! Engage and disengage the lock. If you see brown stuff and dirt coming out, it's a good sign. Mine's lasted me 4 years.

Sometimes when I'm not bothered, I just leave the Xena on but I really shouldn't! I feel that if i clamp it in a vice, I might crush the lock body since it doesn't seem to be as solidly made as the motrax!

110db is plenty loud - kinda like a rape alarm in terms of loudness. It's piercingly loud enough to get curtains twitching in the morning when I'm pretty dozy and clumsy with getting the bike unlocked

While I'm at work I'll be using the chain as well, since at times i will probably be out of ear shot.. but i think for nipping into a shop or at the gym where I'm about 20m and an open window away together they will do the job, and in the event it is stolen without the almax on, it will still be covered because of the vishas Thumbs Up

Will have to have a look at getting them ordered, is there one place better than most or will they all be similar and I should just shop around for the best price?

Cheers.

I've got an Oxford Monster, with a "D" lock which doubles up as a disclock when im out and about.

I've got another yellow disc lock, which is an absolute beast. Cant remember the make but it's insurance guaranteed.
Looks a bit like this, but the name begins with an A.

https://www.fastbikebits.com/shopimages/products/normal/LODMAX01.jpg

And I've also got a third disc lock, which has an alarm in it.
