Hi guys im just really asking this for some advice really im thinking about doing my full bike test when im 17 but i just want some ideas weather thats the ryt option for me.
So if any of you kind people would just give your opinions that would be great...

( also if you could reccomend some decent 125ccs and decent bikes i could ride under 33bhp after i do my bike test if i go to that route )

Heres some info about me, i curently ride a aprilia SR50R 2010
Been into bikes all my life really ever since my dad introduced me to a little honda cub when i was 8 , id prefere a race style bike rather than a sit up bike as i do trackdays quite oftern and enjoy slinging the bike into and out of corners etc . . .
I do like to ride fast on the track as this cant be done on my little 50...

Budget wise i am ok in terms of expenses such as insurance etc . . .

My budget for a bike is really 2000 but would push to 2500 with a push if the bike was write...

Thanks very much please let me know what you guys think !!!!!

My advice is to do your test and spend your money on a bigger bike. You get more bang for your buck, You can pick up good bargains when you look around the 500 - 650 cc market.

Most bikes can be restricted to 33 bhp, but I would avoid the super sports bikes.

Depends what style of bike you like. My xt125 was a perfect bike to learn on, really lightweight and agile, and quite nippy as well, passed my test on it anyways.

Just buy anything, as long as it can make the 50kph speed tests OK and is rated A2 on the DVLA test vehicles list. You'll only be keeping it until you pass your tests, which since you've been riding for a while shouldn't take you any time at all.

In fact, given the premiums on 125s (purchase and insurance prices) you might be as well doing your A2 test via a training school, on their bike. It'll cost you more than buying a 125, doing the tests yourself, then selling it on once you've passed, but it's less hassle than fiddling around with bikes and insurance policies.

Whatever you do, get your test done ASAP so you can start the clock running on the 2 year 25kW restriction.

At 17 you can only do your test on a 125.

i got myself a set of cones off of ebay and then set them out according the the mod 1 specifications (can find them on google), for hazard avoidance stay in 2nd gear and full throttle as your about to come out of the bend.
I did mine on suzuki en 125-2 and it is a good bike, cheap to run too.

Honestly, just get any running 125. CGs might look dull, but they're easy to sell on, and that's all that's going to matter once you pass your A2 test.

That's if you want to get your own 125 at all. Once you've passed your theory, you could pass your test in a couple of days on a training centre machine. Talk to the local training schools, tell them you've been riding a 50 and see how short and cheap a course they'll do you. You'll end up paying them a couple of hundred £££ on top of the test fees but you'll get it done faster and won't have to deal with the spackers on eBay and Gumtree to buy and sell a 125.

In your situation I'd personally just go to a training school, get a couple of days training and do your test on one of their 125s. Then go out and get yourself something 33bhp restricted. I personally wouldn't get a 600 super-sport as you're carrying 100bhp worth of weight with only 33bhp actual power. That's why I personally went for a 400; it was a bonus that it makes just below the limit without restriction.

Agreed, my teeny little 305 makes just abov- sorry, I mean, almost certainly just below 25kW at the crank. Wink

I'm actually getting a bit concerned about Teflon-Mike. I thought we'd have the usual novella in here by now. Should we start checking down wells?

I was bimbling about on a 125 for a couple of years before i got my arse into gear and got a full unrestricted licence.

Got a zxr400, was an absolute stunner of a bike. Bike whoring below.
Awesome bike, wish i never sold it now.
But i would suggest you get a 125 now. Use that until you get your A2 then get a zxr400 Very Happy

I think everyone should own a zxr400 for a year purely for the amount of fun you will have on it.
Without going on a track, it is probably the closest you are going to get to using a bike to its full potential.

And yes, i did ride like a loon, and yes i did leave the 600s, 800 and 1200s for dust when we went to wales. Twisted Evil

Well in terms of funds ive got around 2500 to 3000 pounds to spend on my test and a bike anymore suggestions guys ?

what im thinking of doing is getting a little cheap 125cc cg or something or something really old uneer £400 then do my test on that after 3 months getting to know the bike etc etc . . . then sell the cheap bike then get something for around 1500 to 1800 price like a hornet 250 or vfr 400 or something simlour which is quick and cheap...

what do you guys think ?

Dont make the mistake of spending alot on a 125, as soon as you pass that A2 you will want rid of that 125.

Example, my friend got a R125 (Yamaha) sweet looking bike i agree, had it for 3 months, passed his A2 and wanted rid of it...good luck getting your £3500 back.

If you just said you're going to buy a £400 old 125 unseen (hell, even if you've seen it and don't know mechanics terribly well) then i hope your lucky penny is very effective indeed, as you'll need it. The market is awash with overpriced tat and lying sellers - it's easy to pick up something that'll cost you double what a decent bike in the first place would've.

YBR125's would likely give you far more value for money (one of the huge bonuses being less breakdowns as they're newer and better value for money).

I think you're along the right track though - 'cheaper' 125 to learn on and take your test on. Then buy a big bike and sell the tiddler on. The cheaper way to get your A2 is going to be by taking multiple 2-3 hour lessons over a period of weeks - if you ride your bike outside of training then the training will take less "contact" (i.e. paid) hours. Obviously the alternative is an "intense" course, which could get you polished off in a few days, but you'll be paying for more training that way (i.e. more expensive).

I am slightly concerned by your idea of a "quick and cheap" big bike (which to my head brings images of bikes like GS500/CB500/GPZ500S/ER-5/NTV650/Bandit 600/650) - an imported 250 and an old (and possibly imported too) 400. They're not exactly known for the cheapest ownership costs in the big bike market.. (in fact, finding a good and reasonably priced VFR400, at the very least, is supposed to be pretty hard).
