missing exhaust fitment?

I was looking to get this (click here) and sent an offer in to buy but i noticed it hasn't got the attachment on to bolt the end can to the pipe. I've never bought an exhaust before but the one i have (that is like a plant pot it has so many holes) has the bit on to bolt my can to. any ideas?

The OEM exhaust on your bike has the 3 bolts fitting on a new can, most aftermarket downpipes/linkpipes use slip on cans that just slip over the end of the link pipe and tighten up using a variety of methods (springs, clamps etc).

Basically, if you buy that exhaust you will need a new slip on can to fit it Thumbs Up . That one has spring posts but a clamp on can would fit too, you jsut need to know the diameter of the end of the pipe.

Ar i see, mine did slid over the pipe then 3 bolts as you say. Any way to make my can (its an aftermarket one with the 3 bolt holes) attach to this as its quite a saving over a new one! Seem quite hard to get for the F model..

Or is it basically i need to buy a new end can. If so what should i be on the look out for?

Either get a flange welded onto those pipes or buy a new can. I haven't come across any bolt on to slip on adaptors before but they may well exist.

Easiest is a new can and flog your old one, how much this costs is up to your tastes, buy a used one if possible as you will save a lot of money. Measure the end of the downpipes you buy and find a can that will fit, will possibly need a new exhaust strap but most end cans come with them. I like scorpion cans, have one on my CBR and it sounds good and was cheap. Things like Akra, Termi and Yoshi may sound better (opinion of course) but they cost a fortune for what they are.

EDIT: Looking at the pic again you might also need a new linkpipe (the pipe between the can and the downpipes as it looks like those downpipes don't have one). I don't know if you can get link pipes for your bike/downpipes combination that have the bolt on style fitting at the end, if not then you'll need a can and a link pipe.

In which case Richie,

you need a new set of downpipes, a link pipe suitable for your bike with an appropriate diameter at each end and an adaptor to bolt your can on with.

Alternatively a new slip on endcan and linkpipe that fits the downpipes you order.

right i bought that exhaust as i got it for half the price of a new set so i have £100 (as the headers are £200 new!) and i'm going to get a slip on sorted if i cant get my can to fit using the adaptor above.. but can i just get any slip on (say from ebay or what ever) as long as the diameter is the same? quite a few second hand ones within my price range. Also would i need to setup/rejet as i'll have the carbs apart soon anyway (bikes been standing for a number of years) or should i just get them balanced?

As well as the link pipe fitting properly onto the end of your new downpipes you need a can and link pipe that is designed for your bike (i.e. one that will route from the downpipes correctly to where the endcan needs to be). Do you know the brand of used pipes you bought?

It's pretty hit and miss about needing to adjust the fuelling, sometimes you will be ok and sometimes you will need to rejet. Balancing wouldn't sort that out although it is good to balance them every now and again. Will just have to wait and see Thumbs Down .

doesn't the 1 I posted from ebay have a link pipe already on? Looks the same size as my steel downpipes and my can was bolted and mounted correctly or am I misunderstanding as in my mind adding another pipe would make the can stick quite far if you get me?

If it looks the same as your current setup then the link pipe is probably part of the downpipes. I'm not too familiar with the layout of your bike, when I had a closer look at the pic it looked like the distance between the end of the pipe and the collector box was too short. If your OEM ones look like this too then just get either a collar to attach your old bolt on can or a new slip on end can without a link pipe Thumbs Up .

Looking at that photo ^, the set on eBay don't appear to be long enough, they seem like they'd get as far as the join by the rear brake lever. If that is the case then you will need a link pipe.

Oh yeah I see what you mean now! I wasn't paying attention to the length! Guess I best start looking for a link pipe, might be able to get 1 turned out of stainless from my old man I hope. if not i'll have a look on fleabay or somewhere. Thanks again for the advice!

Bear in mind that you can use pipe expanders to widen the end of the downpipes or the link pipe if you need to, gives you a few more options Thumbs Up .
