I remember my first year at Uni, all the machines had 3.1 on them. I've got Windows 7 on my machine at home and I hate it ... that reminds me, I was going to make a thread about how much I hate Win7 ...

Windows 7 is by far the best thing M$ have released for the average home user, it ain't too shabby for the geekier either.

I remember juggling things about in the autoexec.bat (?) and loading certain things into the EMS memory and some other type of memory. There was also tweaking of the config.sys was it?

Blimey, that's taken me back - all in the name of gaining a couple of FPS in Tie Fighter

All running on a Elonex 486sx 25mhz with a mighty 8 meg of RAM.

I can remember the excitement of getting a Soundblaster card to replace the system beeping at me relentlessly.

Let us not forget the joys of the early variable baud rate modems, dialling into a BBS and failing to connect for 20 minutes until you finally realised the connection needed setting to a specific rate for the handshake (seeing as they changed by connection). Then the awesome speeds of the v.32 modems landing, all of a sudden ascii pictures were downloading in 40-50 seconds or so!

I did enjoy that video.

I remember the thrill of carrying a copy of doom on floppy in my labcoat pocket for after hours use. Happy days. I didn't get to hear it till I bought my first soundblaster.

The old mans first PC was a packard bell that cost around £2000, I wish I could remember the spec now but it was abysmal, it ran windows 3.1 I remember that much, and used the 5.2" B:\ drives too....

Had this discussion in the office the other day. Some programs were written where clock cycles were used for timing, so (for example) some games would just run too quickly to play on the "turbo" 8Mhz PCs, meaning you had to slow them back down to the 4.77Mhz speed they were written for.
