Morning all,

Would you use a split link on a chain for a VTR1000 or would you recommend a soft link instead? The reason I ask is I know next to nothing about chains when it comes to the links and whether it is safe to use a split link on a thou. Sorry if it's a daft question!

Thanks, James

I've had numerous split links fail on smaller bikes than that.

I personally won't even consider fitting one to a bike bigger than a 125.

That said, my mate was running a nitrous injected TL1000R with stretched swingarm in straightliners and had two split links in his chain so he could ride the bike there, undo the split link, wind the wheel back another 8" using the chain adjusters then add in an extra bit of chain so it could reach.

That was generally my thought process. I remember somebody saying to me that they have failed on larger bikes but I didn't know if it was an isolated incident or not.

Thanks for clearing that up Thumbs Up Karma

i have had a split link pop off, which in turn smashed the hugger when the chain came flying off,
that said, both the cb1000 and bandit 12 both have split links,
im not too worried about it, well not enough to go to the paltry effort of changing them Very Happy

Yes.

Although judging by the state of my chain rivetter the 'soft link' term may be a little misleading.

When you have the choice, and either link costs pennies, why take the risk? If you must, split link it to get it to a bike shop then get them to rivet it.

How is that ^ confusing? It's a good suggestion for those without tools/confidence.
