Got a letter through off the vla today saying that i had to pay a fine of £55 or go to court. This is because i sold 2 bikes to Blacks bike shop and they took the V5C. They said that i only needed to sign it as i was selling it to a dealer. I've never sold to a dealer so i didn't think anything of it until i got this letter through.
Just wondering if anybody on here may be able to give me some on advice on whether i can get out of paying the fine or not?

you need to try and get a letter from blacks or something saying that they bought the bikes at the date, did they give you a recipt? if so photo copy it and send the copy off with a covering letter back to the theiving scum, sorry DVLA.
blacks have not sent off the purple bit off the V5C that says its put into trade by the sounds of it

You sent everything off to the DVLA. Now let them prove otherwise. Wink

When you sell to a dealer you send off the "sold to a dealer" supplement part of the V5, did you do this? That is how you inform the DVLA that you no longer own the bike because the dealer just keeps hold of the V5 until he sells it on which could be months/years.

As Skudd says, you could just say that you posted that section to them and had no idea they never received it, not your fault but royal mails. As has been identified by sickpup, your responsibility ends when you post it, there is no need for you to even prove you posted it. This is of course assuming you haven't already communicated with them and said that you just gave the entire V5 to the dealer and had no idea what to do.

You send off the slip, don't give it to the buyer

Write them a letter stating that you are very concerned to have received a fine because you sent them the yellow slip at the time you sold the bike.

Give them the details of the dealer you sold it to and the date you sold it to them and supply a copy of a purchase invoice or any supporting paperwork you have. Sometimes they will overturn the fine if you can provide a reasonably compelling story.

Good luck!

(Or, if as you say you didn't know what you were supposed to do and didn't send the yellow slip in, your conscience might say you need to pay the fine. I'm too much of a goody two-shoes, I usually take the honest option). Up to you!

It's not a "fine", it's a bribe for not taking you to court (which can fine you). They're bluffing, call them out.
