Has anyone ever bought a second hand helmet?

My current lid, a flip front Caberg was second hand when I bought it. Bought off a family member where I knew the history of it.

Has anyone bought a 2nd hand lid off the likes of ebay or here etc?

It's potentially massively unsafe, the liner will have likely formed itself to someone else's lumps and bumps and most likely isn't going to fit as snug as it should. Plus it's not especially hygienic either.

Bought a few second hand lids. Mostly for offroad, but one road one. Agv one, £70 notes. Nice little lid, veeery tidy. Not like I'm riding a massive bike or anything, was just riding a 125 at the time.

Yes. I bought a second hand Arai Giga when I was an impoverished student, because a) It was the only way I could get a helmet that wasn't complete crap and b) It had a custom paintjob and dark visor. Did me for a good two or three years.

NO WAY. Like someone else said, would you wear another mans used pants?! Don't think so.
It is recommended that lids should be replaced at least every five years anyway, I have generally changed mine every three years.

Linings are removable and washed.

I crashed in one really battered second hand one, face planted the road nicely. Big gouges out the helmet. Lived to tell the tale


I don't buy into all that crap personally - I'd say kidney, back and chest protectors are just as vital.

I've only ever had two brand new lids in the last three decades.
Whenever I've bought a second hand bike more often than not I've been offered a lid with the bike.
An Arai Giga, (as mentioned above), a white "Bell", can't remember the model, an AGV, dunno what type, a black "Simpson" looky likey and a couple of MX helmets, have all been freebies.
I didn't get gnits, nor did my hair fall out, the AGV and the Arai both took hefty crash related damage, my head survived unscathed.

If it looks like a heap 'o crap, or it doesn't fit, use your loaf and don't use it!

I've borrowed old (or spare) lids off people when I've been in need but that's only been for short periods, otherwise I've always bought new.

I currently have two (yes two) identical Bell M1's.

I have a Raid II to sell, bought it after deciding fit me well at the shop, couple rides later I decided it's too big.

So only used a few times, has spare unopened pin lock and a tinted visor.
