Just curious, what do you think would be there bare minimum you could survive on (rounded to the nearest £1000 p/a). The amount needs to cover you and anybody dependant on you and should be calculated using current costs of living, so for instance petrol and £1.28 p/l or whatever you pay at the moment and mortgage at it's current rate.

As a teenager my mum was unemployed for some decent bits of time (year or two at once) and despite what others complained about we actually 'survived' ok.

So many people consider 'getting by' to be eating expensive food and doing expensive pass times.

So, dunno, but not much if needed.

i manage to survive . I pay out 170 each week and get 60 quid left thats for food petrol n cigs

I have a car and bike but cant afford to run both ,running the car at the mo but my car insurance and phone contract are in with the 170 quid a week so i guess its not all that bad?

But your mother would get housing benifit and would nt have to pay council tax (or what ever it was called then). You would also have gotten free school meals. So you have to add that into the equation Thumbs Up

It would have to be £16,000 after deductions for me.

No housing benefit as she had a mortgage (but she did manage to freeze the payments and just pay some interest I think).

It was just an example.

When I worked at Starbucks and various other times I would often survive on very little. Push bike to get around. Cheap bread, pasta, cereal etc with a bit of cheese and meat from the 'offers' section as a luxury.
On that - one time a girl working there was moaning she was broke, so I got her to give me the £1.50 she had and managed to get enough food for a couple of decent meals for two, though the nearly out of date food was relatively cheaper then (it helped we were in a Sainsburys, so could time it right for the biggest volume of offers Smile.

I'm always amused when people consider a contract mobile phone or expensive car insurance a 'necessity'.

Hit the nail on the head.

Thread was partially brought on by a friend of mine complaining he was completely broke when he has a 2007 focus on the driveway and is looking to upgrade to a 2009 BMW 335i, he has two iPhone 4's (one is a work phone) list goes on but basically a bunch of other crap.

Hi

Depends on how long term and the situation.

Long term, flog the house, cars and bikes and move somewhere cheaper on the equity so zero mortgage / rent. Get rid of mobile phone, home phone, broadband, TV (including Sky) would remove most of the living costs. That would leave me with food, water, gas, electricity and council tax (and the amount for those would vary depending on if I were at home all day, or if I were unemployed). Probably means somewhere around £300~£400 a month eating cheaply.

Edit - Suppose I should add that while I might have a load of bikes, I am not really in the habit of spending loads on new bikes / cars. Nor am I one for going on expensive holidays or going out for expensive meals / nights on the town

All the best

Keith

A human needs food, water and shelter to survive, nothing else.

I, along with many others, could do this on nothing.

Survival does not mean using an old car instead of a new one, or not upgrading your mobile bloody phone.

If I cut back, so just paying for the house and essentials power/water/food ect. Plus running a 125cc bike/ bicycle as transport I could survive on min wage, I have in the past and only bought the house on the theory that I may not always have a good job but I'm confident that I could always find someway to scrape the bills together.

I like motorbikes its my main and pretty much only hobby, so I spend a rather large amount of money on motorbikes and associated stuff.
I'm not interested in fashion- I buy cheap clothes.
I'm not interested in geeky electronic stuff- I don't have an Iphone, massive TV, expensive computer or hi-fi.
I'm not interested in the gym- I don't have a gym membership.

But most people want everything these days and the best of it. People are living the life of upper class snobs but with a modest working class income and the idea of cutting back seems to mean cancelling the movie channels, the whole country is living in a complete fantasy created by clever marketing and peer pressure.

And how would you be surviving mentally on nothing but food, water and shelter? And for how long? Would you have access to a river to swim in? And the luxury of a bit of rope to tie to a tree so you could alleviate the crushing boredom of your survival-only life by swinging into the river?

We're not animals, we need more than just food and water and shelter. Something to while away the years.

All my living bills come in at around £190 per month.

On top of this i pay out for per month;

Mobile = £40
Car Insurance = £125 Surprised
Debt repayment = £150

Then weekly;

Shopping = £20-50 per fortnight (nappies and baby food pushes the higher limit!)

Work lunches = £20 per week (i could get this from the supermarket to save money and i keep meaning too. Thing is i work airside at Stansted Airport so you can not take any drinks or yoghurts through so i end up buying a meal deal from boots for £3.79 a day!)

Petrol = £70/75 will last a week - sometimes just over!

Comes to around £925 per month and i get around £1000 after tax per 4 weeks (sometimes more sometimes less due to commision!)

I could happily get this down to £625 per month. I could;

Stop having a garage bringing my half of household bills to £175.
Sim only contract will be around £20.
Buy a cheaper can and insurance could be around £40.
Having a cheaper car which is diesel would drop my fuel to around £40 a week.
I would buy my lunch from supermarkets at around £20 a month.

If i became unemployed i could get this down further to around £385 per month as i still need to pay rent and debt and this is still sharing food bill with the Mrs.

And if you lived 16miles away from where you worked, how would you get there and back?

And how would you cope going to work naked? Confused

I think thats a really good example of what G was talking about.. ie: how soft we have all become.
" Lifes so sh*t cos I am broke... I can hardly afford my sky tv and iphone"
If you live 16 miles away from work ... buy a £50 bike and cycle.

For me,

£435pcm for rent including all bills and internet. (Gets me a part-furnished room in a shared house with no living room, shared kitchen and bathroom)

As of next week petrol should go down to £10 a week for work + whatever I use socially, so call it £60pcm

Then sim only contract is £15pcm which I think is acceptable for what I use it for and the convenience of direct debit.

Insurance is around £40 I think Confused

Credit card minimum payment is ~£30pcm at the moment I think.

That in theory should leave me around £400 to play with for the month including food (but I do eat out pretty often).

Of course Halifax do their monthly arse rape and rob me of three figures. Then I pay off the whatever I owe to whoever and slowly I end up with about £100 to myself for the month.

I need a better paying job Laughing

The lowest I've ever had to survive on was when I was on placement and I was fortunate enough to get 16k for that. I lived easily on that, in fact I had spare money for hobbies so that was great. If I didn't live 45 miles from the office I would have had ever more money to spend.. But thats another story. I think I could have lived on less if I stopped spending money on things I enjoy, but unless I could find cheaper ways of enjoying myself I would start to hate life a bit I think. I'm not a fan of the concept of giving up most of my week to survive, the only thing that makes it acceptable for me is that I can buy things at the end that give me a period of enjoyment.

Confused So you are going to survive for nothing on food water and shelter, I would assume to forage enough free food you would be in the woods somewhere, so nowhere near a library.

Even if you were to live as a tramp in a city you could not get a library card. My local library needs enough i.d. to open a bank account (no lie).

And what if it's physically impossible?

Then the person would fall into the category of being disabled I guess.
I am no statistician ... but at a rough guess I would say that amounts to less that 2% of the population.
The point is, most people (and this is what the thread is about) can cycle to work if they really needed to.

Sure, they are some that cant due to disability of one form or another.
There will also be people that cant due to a genetic defect with the inner ear that causes them to never keep balance... or those that have a mental illness that means they cant go near a bike without feeling violent. Rolling Eyes
But most people can ride a bike. .. and if you work 16 miles away ... get on your bike and ride there.
I did this during a particularly lean period in my life when I was 22 ... I used to cycle from Effingham to Chessington (approx 28 mile round trip), and back.
On my mums small wheeled shopping bike.. with 3 gears.
(not a 18 speed, 26 inch wheel bike) Smile

Fit as a fiddlers cat I was Thumbs Up
Unfortunately the sight of me riding my mothers shopping bike with basket repelled the women somewhat Thumbs Down

Just over 7k a year at tescos.

Live at home.

I'm just part time. Cba full time Wink

monthly outgoings;

car insurance; £100
rent £120
phone £30
Bike insurance £20
Petrol for both?? £30-40?

This month alone I managed to blow about £250 on the monkeybike getting her on the road (okay then pimp parts haha)

Seem to do okay. I don't really go out clubbing anymore since I got a car and stuff. It seems wiser to spend the money elsewhere, e.g motorbike.

After i pay that off I have about 200 to spread between four weeks. So it's like £50 a week. That's fine seeing as I can quite happily live off nothing for a month.
