Hi

Advice please preferebly from owners/ ex owners.

Have done a search and read a few threads. I am fully aware of the people on here that don't like them. Laughing

I'm bored of my fazer. Every time I have an IL4, I want a V twin, and vice versa.

I've never owned a triple. Best of both worlds, or worst of both? I'm tired of having no midrange, for 70% roll on, roll off, riding. Lazy riding, on the road.

I'm looking at 98/99ish "pretty" shaped Daytona's. Would appear I can get a decent one for £2000.

Other bikes I've considered are TL's, Falcos and early blades.

Opinions please.

Thumbs Up

Id always go down the V-twin option for torque.

TLR is a bargain bike for the money, with a pretty aggresive power delivery for a twin and smooth too.

A completly standard TLR apart from a Ohlins shock (rids the crap rotary shock)

I know Marjay had one a while back (955 that is)

I rode a TLR about a week ago. Was okay, this particular one sounded mechanically like a bag of shite though.

Id aviod like the plague then, If you can afford an Sp1 go for that.

Same kinda delivery, with sharper handling and HRC build quality.

I got a CAT C respray for £2500, was mechanically sound and toured France/Italy/Switz/Germany on it, no problem

My instructor had one and couldn't recommend it enough.

I think for the money, they are one of the best bikes out there. If I don't get a 675, or a street triple next, then it will almost certainly be a 955.

Cousin has one, says he can't fault it. Sounds beautiful and looks good, with plenty of torque for those lazier riders Wink

Yes they are good bikes. Quite heavy but can hitch up its petticoats and keep with the best 'of em. Terrifically stable mid corner and with a sound the likes of which you've never heard. The closest sound I ca think of to the sound of a 955i changing from second to third when 'on it' is actually a Yankee V8.

Brakes: Excellent, but sometimes need bleeding often

Suspension: Great but let down by the bike's weight a little

Reliablity: Top. Probably the most reliable bike I've owned (over a long period of time), and mine had an alarm fitted.

Build quality: Can be variable, but "my" bike is now owned by a mate of mine via the ownership of a friend of a friend. Its done over 45,000 miles and still looks like you just wheeled it out of the factory.

They aren't super comfy, and they suit tall people more than shorties like me, but they are good bikes. Not too much power, not twitchy like recent litre bikes, but a good solid big bore bike.

As ever, if you want 'torque' get a big cc bike.
955i is a bit like the ZX7R to the GSXR750. Old and outdated with 'steady' handling and a position that puts a fair bit of weight on your wrists.

If they were cheap, could understand it, but for the price you can get a lot more bikes with a lot more instant go (98 R1? Wink).
Seen early GSXR1000s with aftermarket fairings go for £2k.

675 manages to handle (and pretty much match engine performance with the extra cc) as well as similarly priced rivals; 955i doesn't really.

Can't see any real reason to get one apart from aesthetics/Britishness.

My brother has a Daytona 955i, and although it is a nice bike for the cash, it has the almost the same acceleration as my R6 and and uses quite a bit more fuel. Riding position is less comfortable and more extreme than a similar aged R6, and is less agile, and feels like a much much heavier bike.

Tbh, I'd struggle to recommend it over similar aged 600 machines. However, a 675 is an entirely different beast.#

Saying that though, he seems to like it and enjoy it, but it's a first sports bike and he did move to it from from a 99 Tiger 955i

I've had a gsxr1000k2 in the past. Brilliant bike no doubt about that, but completely wasted on the road. Way too quick, IMO.

I'm not after outright speed, it's midrange - I know it's not going to be considerably quicker than my current bike, and that suits me fine. Test ride time, I guess.

Basically I'm looking for something along the lines of my old 900ssie, with less low down lumpyness and a little more top end go, but with the same stable handling.

'Heavy' I've heard quite alot. 198kgs, ish. So not considerably more than my fazer. More than an R1 or something, obviously. I'm about 6'1'' so physical size not really an issue.

I have no idea why, i prefer big bikes with slow but stable cornering, specially on track.

I know exactly what you mean about 1000cc IL4s being a waste on the road.

V-twin V-twin V-twin

Or a Ducati 749 Wink

I don't have that much self control G... I did have a GSXR1000 briefly! It was crap on the road.

I still want a 749. I don't have the cash though. I'm potless. I'll be PX-ing the Fazer, and it's worth shit all. I've phoned up about one 955i and they've offered me PX what I paid for my fazer, so if I can knock 200ish off the 955, I have to put 800-1000 on top.

Id say thats quite a lot for a 955 though, great as it is though.

I also checked the prices myself, not as cheap as i expected.

I mean 749's arnt MASSIVE amounts of money nowdays.

Too much for me to blow on a bike, but compared to other sports bikes not too bad.

I'm in pretty much the same boat, put the battery back in the ZX9 this morning and ran it to work in this glorious weather, despite the fact that it's loads better in every imaginable way compared to the XJR, I still found myself quickly wishing I was on the 400. The bike is way more capable than I am, but just a bit too capable for our roads/laws/me Smile

I'm leaning more down the naked twin/triple route route myself, just need to resist the urge and wind up with another comedy rocket Laughing

I've ridden one of these too and really liked the engine - I thought it had the smoothness of a 4 when cruising but the bark/bite of a twin both coming on and rolling off the throttle.

That said, I have the older 885 motor tiger (1996) and can safely say that it's designers must have been smoking crack when designing it. Not sure what the 955s are like to work on, but my 885 required silly amounts of work to do simple things (eg removing the whole tail set-up of body panels, then dismantling the airbox before being able to get at the carbs). That said, as it's FI then there may not be as much of an issue...also fit and finish were pretty good - my bike has only done about 22k granted, but it cleans up pretty well and all the switchgear/moving bits and bobs are in pretty good nick for a 15yr old machine...

I had a go on a really early speed triple. Are they the same engine? Either way it was definately a very usable engine. Enough midrange to be usful in town and a good top end for b roads. And the noise on wide open throttle!

Also despite it being quite heavy it felt very stable and sure on the road.

That same bike is still about, runs fine and looks very good for its age.

the '97 and '98 Speed Triples had less power than the 955i IIRC, they put the 955i engine in it later on.
