Tragic personality flaw, been riding my SV650S for a week now, and have already test ridden an 848evo, and am now going to test ride a Triumph Scrambler.
The SV is great, nimble, fun, looks good, plenty fast enough but it just doesn't give me a grin every time I take the cover off.
I love the 848, but it's no use for some aspects of what I want a bike to do, and I worry for my licence! I love the Scrambler for it's pure looks, for the lazy riding style, but this also leaves me lacking in some areas.
I dislike the large enduro type machines like the BMW GS and the Varadero, Tigers et al.
So in reality it looks like I need about three bikes, an 848, a Scrambler and a small 125 trailie for 'popping out' on. This reality is not an option, my pockets aren't that deep!
How do you guys go on, bikes are surely a compromise in some areas or do I have to work a little harder, save more dosh and have an extension to the garage!

1.) Remove SV fairing.
Add this:

Yeah I had that plan as well, REALLY bolt the KTM down, they tend to go walkies easily.

MattSpatts old 520, mad fun. It is normally locked to it's stand in the garage with a chain and it is surrounded by alarmed bikes. I hope it will be enough. But at the end of the day if they wants it they will take it. Once the garage is sorted out better I will lock it to something more solid like some racking or something.
I personally think superbikes are overrated and more about showing off. Very few riders 'need' a superbike to get more from their riding. Most of them I reckon would be just as quick on a more upright equivalent. Obviously most of then look the tits but I feel if you can get past the looks and go for something more upright they will usually be better bikes for the riders.
On the continent they are no where near as popular and bikes whereas bikes like my TDM are.
The only time I remember being left in the twisties by sports bikes is by a guy on a Fireblade ( he knew how to ride a bike), by Wave on his RSV and by my dad on his Sprint (not a sports bike I know but still) The rest of the time I can keep up fine on my TDM It handles fine brakes extremely well and has enough grunt but I do lose out in the straights to modern SS 600's. But I feel I am more usable power as I had loads low down.
I know there will be a lot of people disagreeing with me and probably because I haven't articulated what I mean as well as I would have liked.
Basically I think if you buy an R6 because you love the looks good on ya, but if buy it because you think it will make you loads faster, I think a few track days would be better. On the road it is 90% rider 10% bike. I have beaten R1's through twisties (well an R1) not because I'm awesome but because the rider wasn't very good.
Thinking of buying a sports bike? get the more upright equivalent and enjoy a more reliable bike with better MPG that won't destroy your back.

Whilst I broadly agree with your post Chris, I think that you might have 'beaten' the R1 rider because he couldn't be bothered... that doesn't somehow mean the TDM is quicker, and it doesn't mean he's a rubbish rider. I do agree that most people though would be happier and probably therefore quicker on a less powerful slightly less focussed bike. That doesn't necessarily equal a trailie though. |
No he was, nailing it in the straights then going round the corners with extremely slowly whilst hanging off like a monkey, constantly checking in his mirrors every time I was up his arse in the corners then nailing it again. He was a straight-line warrior. Does it mean, my TDM is a quicker bike? of course not, but is does mean having a litre superbike doesn't make you Rossi.
The only reason I have a trallie style (if you can call it that, it take a 120/60ZR18 front) Is my height, I'm 6'5" it fits me well. My post was open I stated "Upright bikes" meaning Hornets, Fazers etc.
