I've got my cbr apart to do the head gasket, just realised then as im putting it back together that the cct was all the way out when i removed it.
Should i stick a new cam chain in while it's apart? Or just wind the tensioner back in, cams back on and chain back on and then see what it's like?

They are cheap so its worth a go, although changing the cam chain can be a bit of a faff as you need to rivet it etc, and make sure it doesn't drop into the engine cases...

Did you lock the CCT before you removed it or just unbolted it?, if you didn't the plunger would have come all the way out anyway giving you a false idea as to it's state. You could always check the chain if your manual gives you the distance and wear limits between a certain number of pins, some do some don't.

Pull the chain tight to remove any slack,
then using vernier calipers,
measure the lenght of cam chain is it to
service limit.

It's spring loaded and on a ratchet, if you remove it ,it fully extends then locks in that position. Unless yours is uber high mileage then it is unlikely that it is fully extended whilst in the bike.

Wind it back in, lock it in the IN position using a tab of thin metal, refit it, release it to let it extend fully then put the cap bolt back in.

If it is in the bike it is a royal PITA to get at.
