Didn't know that, assumed all covers were legal during day time as you can get an MOT without lights at all

If it's fitted it's got to work and has to emit a white or in certain vehicles a yellow light.

Unfortunatly when you fit a tinted or coloured headlight cover it does none of the above and is illegal under lighting regulations.

If it lets light through it, its a lense
If it don't let light through, its a 'cover'.

Covers are legal.
Old fasiooned cars, they used to put canvas hoods on them, during the day.
Some cars have 'pop up' headlamps that retract into the bodywork.
Some cars have shields that slide over them.
A lot of fog lights and spot lamps come with plastic covers, that can be fitted or removed.
All are perfactly 'legal' under C&U regs, provided that 'when required' the lamps operate as they should.
Deciding factor is whether whatever is placed infront of a lamp passes light.
If it does, its not a cover, it is a lense and must meet C&U lighting regs as a lense,
ie white or yellow for a headlamp, red for a tail, amber for an indicator, under no circumstances Blue, unless vehicle comes under special exemption, as an emergency services vehicle.
Headlamp beam pattern, maximum wattage and minimum intensity.
If it doesn't pass light, then its not a lense, and in effect, its the same as not having the lamp. Fact that its bolted to the vehicle should make little odds is its light is not visible.
Daylight MOT regs are questionable.
First of all, there is technically no such thing anymore, I think they issued the last MOT actually annotated 'Daylight Hours Only' about 1991!
Motorcycles built prior to 1982, I THINK have grandad rights, that they don't HAVE to have lights, as the C&U regs didn't actually demand them prior to that.
There's a time window, to around 1985 or 1986, when the wording is 'if fitted as standard' then they must have lights, and after that, it's mandatory.... 'with exeptions', in which theres a whole raft of loop holes and anomolies.
Post 1991, to 2000, its a bit of a nightmare, and after that, it gets even more confuddling with EU harmonisation rules, and the lowest common denominator rules, which have brought back the 'Day-Light MOT', in as far as you can get an MOT on a bike that doesn't have lights, BUT, it is no longer a recognised entity.
My 1981 Montesa Cota, came from the factory without lights, as a competition bike. It was road registered at first sale, and gained its one and only MOT certificate in 1984, at three years old, marked 'Daylight Use Only'.
When first sold, it came with an optional lighting kit......
Until its first MOT, you could use it in the day, with or without lights, or at night with the lights, perfectly legally.
After its first MOT, as it was marked 'Daylight Hours Only'..... ride during the day, fine, BUT get cought on the road, past lighting up time, even with the lighting kit, and you were, in effect, riding without a valid MOT......
Same goes now; you can get a bike tested under Daylight rules, with the headlamps covered, but there's no annotation on the MOT cert to say thats how it was tested, so what would happen if after test you uncovered the lights and rode at night?

Legal Connundrum - Mud on the Headlamp lense, during the day.

(Or in the case of my Rangie, when I dipped it in the Sibbertoft slime, nose first, and found out that the reflectors were MG items with side-light ports 'unfilled' with side lights, the Rangie having seperate sides in the wing..... INSIDE the lens!

((On which topic, if any one tells you that the best way to get mud OUT of a headlamp is to stick it through the dishwasher.... they are correct..... unfortunately, what they HAVEN'T told you is not only does it do a damn fine job of getting the mud out..... also does a pretty good job of removing the silvering from the reflector, too!)))

To my mind, get it thick enough, its a 'cover'....... but try arguing that with the plod!

I had a similar thing on my RS 125. Failed it's MOT but because it had velcro 3m stick on pads, he took it off straight away and passed me!

I was never stopped by the police for it, but the lights were almost useless around Epping Forrest and Hoddeston, so really, if you want to be seen, don't bother!

They are illegal.

I have the tinted flydcreen, and have just ordered the cover, even more reasons to avoid the filth, which adds to the fun of the game ... you are like warped though .. Wink Very Happy

Here's a pic of my lil RS before it left me. Meh at being warped, maybe I do like to have attention, I dunno, but I just enjoy this forum. However I don't lie :p

As for the headlight cover, they look shit close up because of the stickers and gap.
