Afternoon all.

Whilst driving to the shops for some milk, all of a sudden, my car sounded like a dragster. Initial though was that the exhaust had fallen off. Parked up, looked under the car and everything was where it should be and nothing was dangling. Got home (thankfully a short distance) and inspected the system from front to rear and found this:

It's the flexi bit on the cat (typical it would be the most expensive part of the exhaust system Rolling Eyes). Diagram for clarity:

In usual renault style, to get to that section I'd have to pull off the air filter assembly etc to get to it. However, my question is, does anyone know if this can be repaired (I'm open to bodge job repair ideas as the car is old and knackered anyway), or is it a £100 new cat job?

Cheers all

You can buy universal flex ( from most local factors/exhaust specialists, failing that ebay), but you will need to measure the diameter and success with them is hit and miss.

If you are not planning to keep the car for long, perhaps not past its next MOT, just buy a cat bypass pipe if you can find one.

You can buy a race cat... just to weld on and fit.

I used the race cat to get car through the MOT.

There is flex on pre cat cars.

To be fair, I've had the car since it was 4years old, bought it with 20,000 miles on the clock. It's now 11 years old and has 140000 miles on the clock. I don't think it's too bad for a french POS that's not needed anything more than a set of pads/discs and a few fluid changes.

I'll look for a cat bypass pipe. I'm reluctant to do a proper repair as I doubt the car will pass it's next MOT in october. The brakes need re-doing (pads/discs/shoes all round) the rear tyres need replacing, there's an intermittent immobiliser problem that causes starting issues at least once a weak, the clutch is starting to feel a bit ropey, there's a very minor oil leak from the engine and another minor oil leak from the gearbox (no drips or anything on the ground under the car, but a definite oily moist patch on the underside of said components) and there was a couple of advisories on the last MOT for worn bushes etc. If I spend £100+ replacing the cat I might as well fix the other stuff and by the time I've done all that I'd have been better off just replacing the car. It's got to that stage where it's becoming a money pit.

If there isn't a quick fix that lets me run it into the ground, I'll cut my losses and sling the car in the skip. I need a more practical car anyway... A 2 door coupe with no rear leg room and a tiny boot isn't the most suitable car for a family of three that's planning for another baby in the near future.
