Right, Every morning I ride past a junior school when all the parents are dropping off their sprogs and they seem to have a real knack of opening their doors right infront of me. I tend to cross the white line to give enough clearance but if theres on coming traffic I cant (Obviously) and the other day just this happens.

Im riding along, at around 25mph and suddenly right infront of me some bitch opens the door of her pink suzuki 4X4 like 5 meters infront of me, I slammed the anchors on and planted my feet on the ground and managed to avoid hitting it. Bring on blasting the horn, shouting at her and her looking blankly at me as if its my fault! By this time, a crowd of parents and kids were watching from outside the school so I told her too look what she was doing and rode off. (If the kids and parents hadn't been around, I probably would have told her exactly where to go)

But the thing is, this kind of stuff happens all the time, what reaction do you guys have to it? Do you just ignore it and carry on or do you do what I do and have a go at the driver? When a bus pulled out of a junction in front of me a couple months ago I got on the bus and had a real go at the guy. Needless to say the two old ladys on the bus looked rather worried Embarassed . But seriously, I would obviously never actually hit the person however I do have rather a bad temper Evil or Very Mad

So what do you guys do in SMIDSY situations (Short of running their car over with a tank https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4Gqmfa7qog Laughing )?

Awaits 'Cool story Bro's' Wink

Well, things happen.

I nearly got hit head on today. I turned left into a road and a car came face on. I swerved left and braked in shock. His lane was obviously the left one but he took the right lane, even though there is an island. I was very pissed off afterwards!

Although when you think of it, thigs happen!

Let me set this straight.

My commuter is a Derbi GP1, yes its a scooter, but it gets me around town just fine. This is what I ride daily, its bright orange and florescent green so its kind of hard to miss.

The GSXR is a project bike at the moment, but once I pass my full test it will become my every day ride, I dont own a car (Well, not a road legal one anyway) and the bike is my only method of transport. I just happen to like GSXR's. Yes, it will be ridden in winter as well.

So you are the infantile GSXR bitch. Which is a ped boi.

Roll on son, your not wanted here.

On the contrary, it would appear that you infact are a complete troll. All you seem to do (Having just looked at your post history) is troll around and insult people. If you dont like what you find here why not move along and troll somewhere else.

If you are a 'seasoned member' why did you only join today, have no karma and have posted nothing helpful?

So leisure riders aren't 'real' then?!?!? So what are they?
Figments of our imagination?
Optical illusions?
Spectre's of another reality perhaps?
Maybe they are really beings from another planet, and the power ranger suit a cunning disguise!
Perhaps they are 'unreal riders', as in 'Thats unreal man!'
Or they are surreal riders...... pondering the meaning of existence, and whether a fuel injected motorcycle, because it has an electronic brain, can 'exist' in a way a carburated one cannot, on the "I think therefore I am" principle.......
On which ponder point, I think I shall end, before I start getting deeply into the melonchola of Descartes, and the thological pontification he used to justifyt his guilt rejecting the catholic church, denying the existance of an immportal soul in order that his former sins wouldn't condemn him to etternal purgatory, and whether his greatest sentence was really only so great, becouse his editot removed the final word, "Sober".....
His relationship to Makavelli, and the re interpretation of the whole bag of worms by Satre, which would be enough to make a Dreakfast DJ want to slash his wrists and dangle his wedding takle in a food blender whilst listening to Morrisey Records......

Get a louder exhaust, and ride with your lights on.

My YZF450 is anti-socially loud. It actually pisses people off it's so loud.

But! I've never been pulled out on. Wink

Had a SMIDSY once sat in a 4x4 in a second hand car sales lot driveway, as I came off a roundabout about fifty yards up the road.

He looked straight at me, we even made eye contact, he looked the other direction, then straight ahead, and pulled out.......

Half way accross the road, it SUDDENLY dawned on him, what he had JUST been looking at.........

And did an emergency stop....... RIGHT across the lane I was in!

I was stationary, feet flat on the floor, bike in neutral (I had THAT long to do an e-stop in anticipation of his numptyness!) Miming a tank commander scanning the horizon through binoculars at him.....

Heaven forbid if this had happened on your first day out or even worse, ride home from the showroom on your brand new GSXR, whatever would you have done Minh?

What would you have done!!!

Yes I know you are not a new rider.

Well, I did get home and think about insurance. It would have been his fault but then of course injury is the other question. Still, it was quite a shock for me and I am very glad to be alright. First time this has happened to me!

The door thing does happen but I think that is a little easiesr to avoid if you stay in the middle. It depends really.

Had a similar thing happen to me. Getting kind of low on the ns125r round a large roundabout, bloke in a car looks like he's going to pull out, we make EYE CONTACT for a second or two, I know he's seen me. I go to take my exit, swung it over to the left...... BAM he pulls out! Pratt! Leaves me swearing like a trooper, I panic, and somehow managed to get from a almost kneedown left, back to leaning right, where i changed leaning so quick, i couldnt go low and continue round the roundabout, where i ALMOST went straight into a kerb, luckily i stopped about 2ft from the kerb and carried on round the roundabout.

That Rossi Wannabe is a plonker. Laughing

I ride all weathers and have had people pull out in front of me and had doors open in front of me from SMIDSY's. It happens and its a fact of life. Doesnt make it any less scary than a "weekend warrior" experiencing it. It makes my arse pucker every time it happens.

As for his comments about the GSXR and then the ped boi one. Would hate to be so narrow minded that I stick to 1 brand of bike and hate everything else.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here and suggest that you aren't forward planning enough. One of the first rules of riding past a row of traffic is to see which of the cars are occupied, and anticipate that the car door may fling open. Especially since you say this happens all the time, you should be ready for it. The mums should know better but bear in mind that the kids may just fling the doors open.

You do the right thing in crossing the white line to give a door's width if you can. But if you can't, modify your speed accordingly and go slowly past them.

As Minh says, in the event of a claim they would be liable for opening a door into your path, but you'll be the injured one. Sooner avoid the crash than have the moral high ground and a smashed up bike.

When someone does something stupid and nearly causes an accident, I'm infinitely polite about the whole thing. I raise my hand in a no-harm no-foul sort of gesture followed by a gentle wave of my hand in a "please complete you manoeuvre as you are blocking my path" sort of way.

My theory being that firstly, they made a mistake. Humans are prone to this fault, it can't be helped. Yes, if they removed their heads from their backsides it may help ease the problem, but if they haven't done it by this late stage in life, they're not likely to do it in the near future.

And secondly, they made the mistake, they are in the wrong. If you act like a complete moron and start shouting at them, in their eyes, you are now in the wrong for your adverse reaction to their minor indiscretion (despite the likely risk of injury/death to you they'll still see it as minor if there's no blood leaked from skull onto the pavement). This entitles them to have a go back at you and tell all their mates about how all bikers are aggressive. If you rise above it, they feel like a complete berk and have absolutely no ammo to turn the situation back onto you. Watching them trying to disappear into their seats as you wave them through after nearly killing you is far better than trying to make them understand just how much of a moron they really are!

Remember people:
Never argue with idiots... They'll only drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience!

My ways of dealing with the situation vary really. From the good old head shaking, the f-rant, the "birdie" .. or as simple as just stopping and crossing my arms (meaning to say: I expected you to do that, I was prepared for it, I planned how to deal with it, now Im just looking at you letting you realise how stupid you look right now ... and yeah, you get the point. It really depends how much time I have. In a rainy day a guy pulled in front of me from a T-junc, doing a right turn, so I had to go facing the on coming traffic. If he didn't stop at the last possible moment, I would not have passed him and I would be flying over his bonnet. I could only turn my head around check that he was OK at least. I think he was more frightened than me at that point.

I nearly came off my bike yesterday at a large roundabout. A school-bus in the middle lane tried to turn it at the last minute, trying to get into a road that a small transit van was coming out off. The both just stopped in the lane, seemingly blocking each other. I was doing 40 on it and this happened right in front of me and I didn't have time to stop, so I went round the back of the Transit, and just as I got passed it, the bus shot forward. I looked round as I passed it and he was up in my face, it just missed my back end.

I was a little stunned, too close for comfort. I kept cool, but soon after, I nearly ran into the back of a small van at a traffic light because I wasn't concentrating on it's stopping, I braked hard.

People do stupid things all the time, more so when they think you will squeeze through the gap they leave because you're on a bike and smaller, but that doesn't make it okay, and you've the right to be livid every single time it happens.

I think it's an offence to dangerously open car doors, my mum was on her push bike and it happened.

And there is nothing wrong with complaining about stuff, that's what being British is all about! Laughing

I second this, Kids are the MOST unpredictable thing on the roads, and if you do this "assault course" run every day, you really SHOULD be aware of the dangers... If you have to slow down to >15mph what's the big deal in the long run if it prevents you or a child being injured? Take this knowledge and use it to become a better rider in the future.

I have a similar problem when i commute to work and the traffic is slow. All the forward planning in the world can't prepare you for a kid/door/milf suddenly being in your path.

What frustrates me the most is the lack of consideration for their own children. It's bad enough to put a grown biker in harms way but to allow young childrens to get out the car 'traffic side' is just irresponsible.

Meh, things happen though Confused

Eye contact and seeing you are two totally diffrent things.
No way can you make eye contact when wearing a helmet, when on the road, with a car driver.....
Well unless your head is stuck through his window Laughing
What he did was possibly see you, although to be honest I think he did not take actual notice you were there, or expected you to be passed a lot sooner.

As to the OP. Next time make sure you stop a few inches from their door. So your wheel is right into the car.....
That should scare them enough.

We had the same problem at my daughters school and wanted the limit lowering from 40 to 20. They would not do it saying that as it was a local road the problem was with the parents who are so lazy that they will not park on the same side as the school and a few yards to the gates. Instead they have to park at the other side of the road, meaning the kids have to get out of the car on the road side and then cross over. When these people were asked by the school & then the police not to do this they got all stroppy and said well the school should do something about the speed of the traffic and provide more parking..... Twisted Evil
Funny how it was never their fault, even though many lived less than a mile form the school and could easily have walked.

End of the day if you hit one of them, no matter what it would be your fault.
