To quote a post on another forum:

"The main reason I notice bikers is because they push past me at traffic lights, as they always think they have a God-given right to be at the front of the queue. And if they can't get right in front because of pedestrians crossing etc. then they just stick their front wheel in front of your wing so you still have to wait for them to sort themselves out before you can move off."

I have also had a colleague at work say a similar thing. When will cagers understand that when a bike that filters past them to the front of the queue of cars at traffic lights / junctions, the bike will continue to filter and will not delay their journey in any way, shape, or form? Or are they just thick?

I haven't started filtering yet, as I have little understanding of how it works, or how it's supposed to work. I'm not entirely sure as to what's acceptable and what's not. I certainly don't mind bikes pulling up along side me, or filtering past me, if they do so safely.

I definitely do that get right to the front and if there isn't much room stick your front wheel in front of their wing thing.

I do however have the good grace to watch the lights closely and scalp it off the line as soon as they go amber if I have so I haven't held them up.

Yeah I filter. But when I filter the roads are much narrower than that!

If I am filtering and the lights change or there is to small a gap to fit through then I will poke my wheel in front of there car. A slight nod just as the car infront moves always does the trick and I have been known to put my thumb up if I would have been pissed off had I been in the car Laughing

When it's pissing down with rain, or freezing cold etc, car drivers are sat in their cage, listening to their stereo with the heating on.
A biker has to have his/her luxuries too.
The main one being that traffic does not exist on a bike.

I filter, absolutely everywhere, and when somebody does try and box me in, I make sure at the next set of lights, I'm parked right by their drivers door/window, and I keep the YZF on high idle.
The noise it puts off is somewhat offensive, and if they want to be childish, so can I.

A couple of swift blips before I pull away also goes down a treat by making their ears ring before I carry on with my journey.

However, the majority of car drivers will either stay put, Or move over to give me a bit of extra room. I'll always give the Thumbs Up to these folk.

Just ignore them its easier than arguing. I've had 1 person I can think of deliberatly try to stop me filtering on the motorway by pulling over the white line and sitting there so I just bost his mirror off.

Person in question I apologise if you are on this forum. Rolling Eyes

they always think they have a God-given right to be at the front of the queue.

It is our right, cagers have heaters and stereo's, we have a head start at the lights, sounds fair to me

they just stick their front wheel in front of your wing so you still have to wait for them to sort themselves out before you can move off

Absoloutley, I'm on a bike and I don't want your dirty great cage driving along side me, nor do I want to race you, so sit there and wait your turn

the bike will continue to filter and will not delay their journey in any way, shape, or form?

The bike has nothing to do with it, they delay their own journey the moment they jump in a cage

There are the odd few though that filter to the front then sit there, both feet on the floor, arms swinging and casually stick it in gear and pull away once lights change. I can see that pissing off the drivers.

I'm always ready to go unless i know the lights and how long I have, cars are long distant memory by the time i'm 100 yards past the lights

I'm definitely up for a bit of filtering https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaOLS_Wgz20

A different forum, but he/she was a mod. There were a few of the mods posting and they were all anti bike. They've deleted the thread now. I do try to ignore anti bike people but it really hacks me off when they make such stupid comments. One poster even said he gets nervous when a black car approaches him from behind and weaves around to overtake. FFS would it make you feel better if it was white - ooo it's a black car, oooo it's so dominating. Please Rolling Eyes

I BET he does 40 everywhere.

Is it just me but when I get a disapproving look down some Daily Mail reading, Midsummer Murder viewing, church fete jam tasting, villager's nose, when I'm riding completely lawfully and sensibly through a quiet village (doing the speed limit etc) it makes me want to hoist up the front and fkn hammer it down the high street at 1,000,000 mph. Twisted Evil

It is just me? okay I'll get my coat then Neutral

Pop open the dark visor, give a smile and a wave.

"oh, what a lovely young man"

then 30 seconds later they hear the scream of your pipes as you nail it up the main road

Pisses me RIGHT off when cagers get arsey about filtering. Shut up and sit there in your traffic. If you're jealous about us getting home 30x faster, you've bought the wrong vehicle.

I do stick myself over their wing at the front if possible. I wouldn't bother but i'm only on a 125 and I don't like revving the tits off it from the lights... makes me look like a complete cock. I'm also giving the lights the hawkeye to make sure i'm on the move before the amber light even knows it's illuminated.

I've had the odd wanker try to stop me filtering. One in particular... I just went around the other side. Most are courteous and either stay put or move over to give me room. I always try to give a wave to those who pull over a good distance and to those who I end up pulling in front of at lights / if they change before I get there. Seems to make commuting that little bit easier if you appease the common cager idiot with a wave.

Mate, that's a dangerous manoeuvre. I never encourage those angels by waving them. What if there is another biker on the other side of the car..

Annoys the hell out of me when I hear people talking about how they hate when bikes filter pass them. A lot seem to say "makes me want to open my door and knock them off". Complete c*nts. As everyone has said, if they want to get home faster, they shouldn't have bought a car, the complete wankers. It really gets me angry sometimes, but then as soon as I get on the bike and filter past all these stationary cars, it puts a smile on my face so all is well. Thumbs Up

I've only had a bike 2 months and so far I haven't had anyone deliberately block me from filtering (not that I can remember anyway). I'd say that (when in slow moving traffic, not stationary) 80% stay where they are and 20% move over to give me more room. I always give a Thumbs Up to these people.

I do think that the people that hate bikes filtering are just jealous because we get home faster and they are sat in traffic. I also think that these cock-wipes that say they want to knock us off are just saying that because they think it makes them sound good.

The majority of cage drivers are reasonable. Sure you get the odd idiot who takes exception to you filtering but I ignore them for the most part. I've found there is no point doing the finger, glaring through the lid or shouting at the tossers on the road. They are in a big heavy lump of metal and I'm sitting precariously on my not so big and heavy lump of metal and cage vs bike has only 1 outcome for the majority of cases.

As for filtering itself. Know the size of your bike. I have a couple of rules that keeps me on the shiny side up and has saved my bacon a few times.

1. If I have to question the gap then I dont go down it. Only when I'm 100% sure the bike will go down without having to ride wobbly at 2mph.

2. Speed. Keep it down, 1st and 2nd gear only.

3. When filtering up to the lights make sure the timing is right. If the lights have just changed to red then safe enough. If I'm unsure I'll happily sit at the back because theres nothing worse than getting half way up to the front and the lights change. Especially when tosser cager is the one beside you.

4. If I have to pull into the lane in front of a car and they allow me without any fuss be courteous, give them a little wave in thanks. After all not all of the cagers are tossers. Some are respectful and some even ride bikes (shock horror).

They might not be the same rules everyone uses but they keep me safe.

The noise it puts off is somewhat offensive, and if they want to be childish, so can I. Agreed, but is also a very obvious way of letting them know your there, especially if your not quite alongside them. This is especially helpfull when travelling through areas of london where the locals like a certain type of saloon with the loudest stereo known to man.

However, the majority of car drivers will either stay put, Or move over to give me a bit of extra room. I'll always give the Thumbs Up to these folk. I have to agree with the thumbs up, kn0bends are in a minority on my route and I've started acknowledging cars which could have come out of side junctions and T-Boned me into the nearest NHS building, but chose not to. Respect works both ways IMO.

I had never filtered before until Sunday.

The idea of it scares me but that's probably because I'm knew to it?

I was sat behind a car in ridiculous traffic and not moving.

Some bloke on a Fazer 1000 (I think?) rode up to me and cracked his visor, winked and waved at me to follow him.

We filtered down the side of the traffic and negotiated roundabouts and junctions together for about 2 miles.

I'm still not happy trying it on my own.

You should never block off ther path. And as both a car driver and a bike rider I would be pissed off in my car if a biker blocks my progress away from the lights. Not ready to set off when they change be prepared to lose your front wheel.......

Only filter up the side to the front if there is room to carry on at the side..... Not that your average car will be along side a bike after 10 yds Laughing

I guess many here have never driven a car, and do not understand that when behind the wheel, your average person becomes a raging lunitic and that bit of road in front of them, is already earmarked for me... And woo betide anyone who puts their self into it.... Laughing

I know how you feel, the first time I filtered I followed someone else and had the shakes afterwards, im still not entirely comfortable about doing it now but I'll give it a go because I don't want to sit there breathing in car exhaust fumes.

What cagers seem to forget is that a bike can take up exactly the same amount of road space as a car. What would they prefer, us moving past and slightly reducing traffic or sitting with them adding to it? Can't have you cake and eat it too, eh mr Audi driver!

Although I was out yesterday taking my new bike for a test ride and everyone tried to move out of my way to let me pass so there are plenty of curteous drivers out there.

I don't enjoy filtering, but my journey hits nearly 2 hours if in a car, 1 hour on a push bike, or 30 minutes of filtering on a motorbike. Filtering just something I have to do. Or move house.... Which I cant afford so meh. Razz
