Hi,

What a week, 1 week after binning my Z750. Someone has gone in to the back of my car.

Wife was stopped and signalling to turn in to a junction when she was hit from behind by a Mini Cooper.

Not much damage to my car (bumper scratched), lots of damage to the mini. Laughing Laughing Laughing

Anyway the car driver admitted full responsibility and promised to be in touch. Unfortunately the phone number he gave was bogus as was his address.

My wife is not stupid and she photographed his car and thus I have his car registration details.

Thinking the police would help, my wife visited the local police station. Where she was told, that it was not a police mater, even though he provided false details. Apparently all he has to do is stop and give you his name & his registration number.

A new bumper ready sprayed is £160 and I can fit myself. My insurance excess is a about £400, so I don't want to contact my insurer and have a record of a claim.

I know it shouldn't affect my insurance in theory, but I have heard of sooooo many cases where it has.

I am looking to use some sort of claims company that will handle the entire process without having to use my insurer.

I have seen companies such as https://easigo.co.uk/ , but I would really like some recommendations from anyone who has used such a company

By the way, there was no personal injuries. Wife and 3 kids all okay.

The registration number is valid (And it's a private plate on a good spec car) and the police did confirm his name to my wife. (But I don't have his address).

I'm also really glad that my car did so much damage to his, it's smashed all around his light cluster and it's metal and damaging the metal body work around it and cracking the wheel arch. (Whilst only scraping the paint of my car bumper!!!)

I can't really believe the chap is this stupid. He could have paid me the £160 and that would have been it. He was young and this is going to hurt his insurance.

you can report it to your insurance company as an incident, no claim, and they will contact his insurance to process. You pay your insurance to deal with this shit, will take them seconds to get you his details.

In addition, go back to the popo, ask them why someone driving into the back of you is not careless driving.....

You could also ask them why someone supplying you with false details is not a crime.

You may want to print that off and take it back in to Plod. Ask to see the Duty Sergeant, and if they still give it the "Not our problem", escalate to the Duty Inspector. Ask to see a copy of their Code of Professional Standards.

Get the register keeper's details from the DVLA then send them a Letter Before Action, then file a County Court small claim against them. If they don't choose to get their insurance company involved, that's their lookout.

Rogerborg gives excellent advice.

If you do want to use a claims co, www.europaconsultants.co.uk get a lot of love on pistonheads.

Because it's true, they will probably tell you that, even if you don't use your insurance co, and even if it was not at fault, you are still supposed to tell your insurance about the crash so the the greedy arseholes can have more money off you next year. Although this rise in premiums should also be recoverable from the idiot who hit you.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

I'm heading to the police station today, better prepared and willing to create a fuss. Can't believe the fob off she got.

If not I am going to pursue it through the small claims courts.

Rogerborg is spot on. In essence, the other driver has committed the offence of failing to stop at an RTC, as they have not supplied their name and address as required by S170 RTA. You have to stop for long enough to provide your (real!) name and address to the other party.

This is definitely a police matter and they need to be investigating it. Especially if further offences such as driving without insurance come into the equation. I would want to know why he's supplied false details.

Well I went to the police station with the wife and have had more success.

At first I got the same story, but I insisted and they got a traffic officer, who totally agreed with me and did say it was an offence.

What has happened, is the address provided is nearly his address. As my wife asked how can you miss spell the area you live in. But the officer said he could be dyslexic.

But because the address was nearly right, the police agreed to provide me with the correct address details. (They could find no phone record for him)

What I now have to do is either go around, or put something in writing.

Any idea of how to be polite , asking I want a new bumper or i'll put the claim through my insurance, obviously affecting his insurance.

Go round and have a chat with the other driver.

If you're reasonable and say that you're not interested in claiming off the insurance and no injury was caused to your family, they'll see it as a favour. If you're willing to sort your bumper out yourself, they'll probably thank you for not claiming off their insurance.

Pleased to hear they didn't supply you duff details at least!

Go round and find the address, check the car is there. File a claim for the damage and for whiplash for the pair of you. You'll get 3 grand each and the car fixed, which should easily cover the damage to the car, your loading for the accident, putting the bike straight, some new riding gear and a nice holiday Smile

Not me in the car (She was coming back from dropping me at the pub). She's already told the police she wasn't hurt. More importantly I had 3 kids in the car all under ten, none of them was hurt.

What a week, ahh well at least i'm well, 8 days after binning the Z I am feeling a load better, wrist and hand feeling loads better.
So lucky really when I think about it and talking to other bikers who have had similar offs who broke bones etc.

Only problem is tight new leathers!! I didn't eat for 4 evenings last week, just to make sure I could get in to them.
