AKA Hayfever. Evil or Very Mad

It's hit, I'm on the Zirtek and it's killing me.

I've got one of THESE on the way so I can continue mountain biking (or at least in less pain) and possibly for use driving to and from work.

Considering one of THESE for the bedroom.

Anyone got any miracle cures?

Roll on the second week of May. Thumbs Up

Vaseline in the nostrils and under the eyes.

That and praying for a merciful death are the only known solutions.

Incidentally, get your medications from chemist-direct, fuck loads cheaper than the high street chemist as they are made by generic manufacturers but obviously the active compound is the same, I got something like 100 tabs for less than the price of one pack of piriton.

Totally agree with that! I paid 7 odd quid for a prescription for 30 days worth of anti histamine, I ordered 6 packs from chemist direct for about 35p a packet and they came through as exactly the same brand I got with my prescription.

Hi

Might be worth trying to change a few other things to ensure it really is hay fever.

For years I got it, but it tended to start pretty early on and last all the summer without getting really nasty (think most people are allergic to particular pollens so only suffer for a short while even if really badly at that time). For me it seems many soaps are what cause it,even some of the hypoallergenic ones, while with basic cold tar soap I am pretty much fine. Think I possibly do get true hay fever but unless I really try and aggravate it it is very mild.

All the best

Keith

Crikey that's early.

Mine has been getting better year on year, I used to get it bad when the rape seed came out which it is starting to now, but it no longer affects me, but come May and grass pollen season I will want to die.

Cagiva, may seem a dumb question but have you been to see your doc about this? I had rhinitis - the constant one, not hay fever - when I was aged about 10-16 and he used to prescribe me Triludan Forte for it, which was great. I only realised how potent this drug was when I heard that an athlete in some games or other was stripped of their medal for taking it as apparently it acts as a kind of steroid also, though I don't believe that for a second as I was (and still am) a fat bastard with no inclination toward rigorous amounts of exercise whatsoever, though it did help clear up my incessantly snotty nose with aplomb. (Dunno if it's still available by the way, it was prescription only and when I used to go and collect it from the chemist I was the ungrateful recipient of many a suspicious look.) Sad

I woke up having a huge sneezing fit and eyes pissing themselves everywhere today, not the first time this year!

I find Piriton really good, never had to try anything else it stops it within about 10 minutes.. worth a try!

Thank fuck for piriton! Mr. Green

Thumbs Up

Another +1 for Chemist Direct, I've been using them for a few years now and invariably they're cheaper than anywhere else.

The Hayfever thread is an annual occurence on BCF with the usual suspects (I'm looking at you JB Wink ) making an appearance.

Mine started last weekend and it'll be a constant source of aggrevation 'til September/October time - NUTS! Crying or Very sad

It's strange as I have felt the tingle this last week and mine usually comes late June through to Mid-July. Every year it gets to the end of June and while everyone else is feeling the burn , I'm fine and think.."this is it...finally....I've beaten it!!" only for it to strike with vengence the next week, and I scream daily for god to take me there and then....

Mines really sensitive, canbe set off by loads of things really but its kicking off big style now 'summer' has apparently come along. One thing about the piriton and zirtek stuff is that for me they did more than stop me from getting the sneezes etc. I was on them for several years as a teen and when I finally stopped taking them I found that I couldnt so much as get in the shower without breaking into a rash, it seemed as though my body had come to rely on them for all allergy protections!

Since then Ive stuck it out and its not as severe as it was. One thing I find strange is that if I go to another country, like this year Ive been Canada and Bulgaria, previously Ive been to mexico/spain etc I never suffer from hayfever, yet when I landed in manchester from canada I was sneezing before we had got back to the car. Neutral

An Update:

The 3M Filtrete is a godsend for the hafever. Although it's just a glorified fan and filter it now means I can:

Sleep all night without waking up
Wake up feeling semi normalish
Sit at the PC all night not sneezing

It does work as when i leave the filtered room I start sneezing within 15 minutes.

£130 well spent! Thumbs Up

NeilMed SinusRinse.

https://www.pharmacyfirst.co.uk/images/uploads/products/NEID165317741.jpg

I don't think you can get it on prescription yet (or maybe? not sure). But you can buy it from most reasonable sized chemists.

If you use it once or twice a day, it clears your sinuses out (gently) with a combination of [medical grade] salt and bicarbonate of soda.

Just remember to blow your nose once you've rinsed with it, else the first time you bend down, any remaining liquid gushes out onto the floor, kinda embarrassing Embarassed

My boss is a Professor of Allergy and he inflicts this particular regime first on most of his seasonal allergic patients (including me)

I didn't think it would make much difference, but it does help.
Fire some of that up there first thing in the morning, follow it up with prescription nasal spray (I'm currently using Avamys) and then deal with any breakthrough symptoms with desloratidine.

And yes I have started sneezing earlier this year as well!
Although that might have something to do with agreeing to have grass pollen concentrate fired up my nose in some experimental thing they were doing last year Laughing

I can recommend the Neilmed soloution and bottle. I had my sinuses enlarged and a septoplasty last year and for cleaning gunk out ya nose you cant beat it. It really does stop the irritation which causes ya the snots. Thumbs Up

I'm going with 'praying for an early death' this year.

I'm extra hateful of the sharp dried mucus in the corners of my eyes when I'm least expecting them.

I have lots of sympathy for hay-feaver sufferers Sad

I have never had seasonal rhinitis. I had chronic all year round infected rhinitis for 15 years! Not sure if it was allergy related, but I put it down to cigarettes, I used to breath smoke out through my nose and strongly believe this caused the damage/inflammation and thus re-occurring infection.

I took antibiotics about 4 - 5 times a year and in the last three years of suffering, I was ill more than well, if I was not ill I was recovering or coming down with another bout.

Nose sprays did bugger all. Antihistamines did bugger all. I had three courses of antibiotics in a row once to knock a bout on the head. It was hell.

The only thing that worked for me was an OP. They reduced the spongey tissue at the back of the nasal passage.

2.5 years on Ive not had one infection, tho I still suffer from slight PND.

Local produced Honey apparently.

Something to do with the bee's collecting pollen from local flowers and creating a natural immune thingy.

Or a constant Diet of Goats milk.....which is evil stuff

Crying or Very sad Miserable time of year for me, alot of people have been feeling the effects of very high tree pollen, namely the Silver Birch which pollenates at this time of year.
My tree pollen allergy can start as early as the end of Jan, which is why i start taking anti-histamine tablets daily to help me cope. The last couple of warm sunny days has released loads of tree pollen causing alot of people to be affected. Roll on the grass season as this doesn't affect me so much, only when it's very very high.

Antihistamine (which doesn't make me sleepy) prescribed by doctor works for me.
It costs me 5000yen per month but I'm happy.
Overuse of Nose spray(which contains Vasoconstriction) sometimes worsen your nose. So Please be careful.

I suffer with many many allergies all year round and have a prescription drug that has made life so much more liveable.

Its called Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride and comes in 5MG tablets. Its prescription only so you'll have to see a doctor about it, but it really does work.
