Ordered a Kebab for dinner tonight, as I am prone to now and then. After a disasterous meal from one of our locals the GF tried a new one last week and loved it so we thought we'd give it another go. Ordered myself mine with the chilli sauce seperate and the GF with hers covered in the stuff.

Imagine our shock and horror when the gf's lamb kebab came smothered with not a single bit of kebab chilli sauce but instead thai sweet chilli sauce! I'm glad I got mine with the sauce on the side. As hers was inedable we shared mine.

What do the weird and wonderful BCF food pundits think on this? Is Thai sweet chilli an acceptable covering for a turkish doner kebab or should it be their own firey tomato stuff they normally use?

My parents came with me to China when i got married. We went for many tasty meals at restaurants (its sooo very cheap there Smile. Of the more memorable was my dad asking for mint sauce to go with the lamb he'd ordered.

The conversation took a while but we felt we'd described 'mint in vinegar' quite well with my wife and father in law as translators.

His sweet peppermint sauce laden bowl of vinegar which arrived with his lamb was interesting, lurid kawasaki green, and surprisingly nice. just not on lamb. I think they got it from a nearby icecream parlour.

I'll go with that. I can see it working. I know garlic may goes well. Back in Belfast they make a chilli sauce which is mayo based and its rank but it does go with the meat acceptably but this shit they gave us today is that stuff you buy in the chinese section of the stupid market and you dip your chicken into it!

Wife and I moved house mid december just gone and every friday we ordered a kebab from a different take-away to find the best one. Tried 6 different places and it amazes me what some places try and pass off as doner meat. And it's even more amazing what they try and pass off as chilli sauce. 2 of the places has meat that tasted like it had builders sharp sand mixed into it. Other places had chilli sauce that looked like something that comes out of the arse end of a very poorly cat. And only one of them actually got the order 100% correct (i.e, no salad on the kebab, seperate sauces etc), in fact, one place completely missed off the fries, sauces and the bottle of coke from the order.

Eventually we found a place that a) Always gets our order exactly right, b) flame grills their meat/burgers over charcoal and c) has chilli sauce that is both tasty and makes you think about putting the loo roll in the fridge before bedtime. The doner meat is also made onsite (which does worry me as there are no sheep round these parts) and it tastes delicious.

Wish I hadn't already had dinner. I'd be ordering the doner/chicken combo with extra chilli sauce and a large fries... mmm... large fries...

Ah well, there's always tomorrow night.

Ordering a kebab without chilli sauce is like saying 'oooh I really fancy a curry tonight' and then having a korma.

I used to love kebabs when I lived in London, me and a buddy would travel about to find good ones. However, my eyes were opened when I was in Australia. The kebabs there are much smaller and mint sauce is a norm, you pick what you want in it, then its rolled and pressed so you have like a kebab 'wrap'. You'd need to have 2 to fill you up but 1 was enough. Shame it's not appeared over here, I've got no chance now that I live in the northern wastelands. The twats give kebabs a bad name up here.

A kebab has got to be chicken and lamb mixed (no doner, yuck... well unless I am drunk) with tzatziki and chilli sauce, with all salad. Hmmm making me want a kebab now Drooling

Annoyingly I do actually like the taste of donner kebab meat but I know how appalling it's fat content is so I haven't had one for about 5 years.

I love kebabs. My usual is a chicken with donner meat. I get both garlic mayo and chilli sauce. It has to be proper chilli though if I got thai sweet chilli I wouldn't be too happy. I had a kebab in york once and asked for garlic sauce, nearly vomited when it was garlic yogurt. Why do that shit. Question

Anyway I've probablys eaten from every take away around here and only ever found one kebab I didn't like. The chicken was really lemony but almost like it had been washed in lemon scented kitchen cleaner or something. My favourite though is from the local and it's a kebab box. It's a huge pizza box and it contains, one large donner kebab, one large chicken kebab, one large kofta kebab, one large donner wrap with salad, one double pretendy big mac burger and a large portion of chips. Plus 2 pitta breads, another wrap to make your own and salad and sauces. It's gigantic and have only ever had about 4 and only ever finished it in one night once. I always end up finishing it the next day. Think I'll get one at the end of the month and take pics.

Thumbs Up +1 , have to put it on myself once it's delivered, once asked the takeaway if I could have mint sauce on my kebab and the girl taking the order seemed disturbed that I'd asked for it that way, seriously it was as if I'd just ordered a blowjob.

Seems to be the done thing in Wales though
