Ok, girlfriends birthday is coming up and I know she is after a sat nav as she has recently bought a car, there are so many different sat navs out there, I have no idea what to look for.

Have a budget of £100 for this, as i'd like to get her other stuff aswell! Thumbs Up Karma

Strange, I read the thread and it says £60, but the price of the GPS now is £156, can't see why it would have gone up so much?

Edit again, link has stopped working

Is there much difference between a £50 sat nav and a £100 sat nav?

Is it correct that some sat navs require updating which comes at a cost? Do you HAVE to upgrade or can you leave as is?

Those sat navs have hugely fluctuating prices. I bought mine for £60 and at the same time other sellers had them up for £300. The link in my original post doesn't work anymore but you just have to search ebay for the same kinda adverts. Try and buy from a UK seller for the extra security. Just search round for the same type. Bare in mind that some have differing processors/RAM and internal storage size.

No you don't have to update your maps with any satnav, you just have the option. The ones i'm talking about from ebay come with decent maps on already and i'm sure you could find updates for free from torrents etc. since they use iGo8

I swear by Garmin sat navs, very reliable and in my view easier and quicker to operate than TomToms. You can pick them up for about £100 now.

Another Thumbs Up for garmin. I've used 4 different garmin units and have always found them easy to use, reliable and had no issues with them.
I have to use a tom tom for work, it has the sound turned off and I use a map book day to day. And my i-phone for specifics if i get stuck.
When I get my new car that has 2 12v sockets I'm going to get a garmin for directions to sit alongside the shite tom tom I have to have on.

The tom tom is slow, hard to work, and not at all intuitive. I'm on my second tom tom unit. After 6 months the batteries no longer hold charge. When I last dug out my first Garmin, it was 5 years old had spent 12 month in a box and the battery still had charge and it fired up!

We got my inlaws a Garmin 18 months ago, after they had used a tom tom and liked the idea. They love the Garmin, even though they originally wanted a tom tom as that is what they used before. We got them a Nuvi 265.

HTH

I've used a bunch of satnavs as in a previous job we tested a bunch including Navman, some other one and Garmin, i've not used a TomTom but have seen one used and the interface and the unit looked like a pile of junk to me, not sure why it's touted as the most useful and intuitive at all. I have used a different unit loaded with TomTom software and it was useless IMO.

The Garmins are the easiest to use by a long shot, you don't need to read the instructions at all everything is obvious or does exactly what you'd expect when you touch the screen. I have an Garmin Nuvi 360 and it's loaded with full Europe mapping and also have North America on an SD card. The unit cost £60 off ebay second hand a couple of years ago, should be able to get a 3 series one cheaper now, get at least a 360 if you want bluetooth.

I find the Tomtom easy enough to use, but I prefer my current Garmin Nuvi. I like the way it shows your previous route through an area, very handy for me. I find the audio directions better too.
