in Windows internet explorer.

The fun of formatting, updating windows then trying to disable all the shit they have added that you don't like.

I stopped using firefox because of its habit of always trying to guess your URL, or suggesting favourites.

This has nothing to do with porn, i'm old enough to be allowed that now Laughing , it just really gets on my nerves. (Much like the stupid tab grouping purple/green nonsense).

Any way to stop it dropping down a history list when you type in a URL?

I tried this in registry, but no effect. So must be applicable to older versions.

Here's what you to permanently disable the IE address bar drop down list:

1. In Registry, navigate to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Typed URLs

2. Right click on the "Typed URLs" key (or folder as presented in the tree.)
3. Click "Permissions..."
4. Click Administrator (for global setting) or user you are logged in as.
5. Click Deny check boxes for Full Control and Read.
6. Click "OK"

Now, when you open a browser and surf, the IE address bar drop down list will always be empty. It's a bit of a hack but beats having to constantly clean the history manually.

thanks. Thumbs Up

Also while we are at it, is there any way to stop the fading out of parts of the URL? Rolling Eyes

Microsoft have some right trumpets in their employ.

I know what you mean, it used to drive me crazy on Firefox

On Firefox 3 there is a plugin called "Old Location Bar" - it allows you to go back to the old style of URL bar (just matching URL or in your case nothing)

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/old-location-bar/

Its not perfect, but waaaaaaaaaay better than the new style

turn off auto-complete.
can't remember how to do this though.

i believe that if you go into internet explorer options, there is a reset button. when you next use the browser it will ask if you want to turn auto-complete off
