Hi all, just a quick question.

My girlfriend got her car insurance cancelled a few months back due to her missing a direct debit.

She managed to get money sorted today and went to insure her car with another company. They have just informed her she can't as her card has been blocked by the underwriters.

My question is, is the block against her, or her card? Her Mum has offered to let her use her card for the deposit and direct debits, and my girlfriend can then pay her back..

So, will the insurance let that happen? If she used a different card?

Thanks!

you say yourself the card is blocked so any other card should work.

no harm in trying.

Can't see why they would block her card over non collection of a direct debit. As other than relating to the same account, they are not linked in any way.
You don't need a debit card to set up a direct debit.

Perhaps the issue is the card has been blocked elsewhere, talk to the card provider on that one.

Brave mother letting other people use her card, as I have to deal with the fallout of this type of thing quite often.
And you have no idea how hard it would be for her mother to sort any issues out if they auto renew the ins when other person fails to answer the letters at renewall time....

Is it with the same company?

Allot of Insurance company's use the same re-writers so if you are black listed with one you could be black listed with a few.

It's blocked her Mums card aswell.

What's rediculous is at no time does it say she's blocked, it even takes the £140 deposit, which then tells you that you have been black listed, and that it will take 7 days for the money to come back.

So now neither of them have the money to try with a different company, an absolute f**king joke!

How can you find which companies are black listed with her name? I'm worried if she rings up and explains her situation the company will black lister her even if they havn't got it already?

Don't know what to reccommend to her?

Its difficult to find out! I worked in car Insurance for some time so know the ins and outs!

Why are they saying she is blocked?

What's the exact situation?

Best thing is to go on gocompare and when it asks you if you have ever had insurance cancelled put no!

Insurance company's will only dig if you tell them to!

Such small margins in insurance that they wouldn't wants to make more work for themselves!

I'm going to have to ask, if that's the case then surely you'd know it's underwriters and not re-writers?

As to the OP, there is a general register shared by insurance companies which lists people who have had policies cancelled or withdrawn. It usually takes somewhat more than a missed direct debit payment to get onto the list. As to finding out more, CLICK THIS LINK for the website of the register, contact them to find out more.

I worked for a broker, we broker deals for the big insurance companys, I could find out who the re insurer is for every insurance company we deal with but as you said it usually takes a fair amount more than a direct debit payment to be blacklisted so this information would irrelevant.

Hmmm, they have taken the insurance deposit twice, then not set up the insurance. Sounds like breach of contract to me, and unless money is refunded IMMEDIATLY then the insurance ombudsman will be contacted, the resultant cost to the insurer of 400 quid for the investigation will stop them playing funny buggers.

Breach of contract works both ways, so good for the goose....

Going to take a shot in the dark here.

She has only just paid off what she owed....

So I can see why she has been blocked from taking further policies out. No company will want to take her on with a outstanding non payment case.

Now the debt is cleared off, it might take a while for this info to filter onto their databases. hence the declines after deposit is payed.

Quickest way at a guess would be to go to the co that she had the problem with and see if they will re-insure her now its all cleared up.

Might find its once bitten twice shy though.

Either that or it will be pay in full up front.
