RIGHT. As if I dont spam this thread enough.
I'm hoping to attend the Quatt cafe meet tomorrow with some mates, but yesterday my PC50 sprung a leak, I've posted this on my PC50 thread in show and tell, but noone reads it, so I thought I'd spam it here too Laughing

Basically, my crank-case is leaking from the hole in the centre of the pic, Not sure what it's originally meant to be, but it's leaking oil, about 1-2ml a minute if I turn the engine upside down (Opposite to the way it is in the pic)

https://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q262/Snaphappyalex/Honda%20PC50%20stuff/DSC00043.jpg

My idea is to wedge a load of gasket putty inside the mentioned hole and compress it as much as I can till it goes hard, Reckon this'll work as a temporary fix? I've ordered new gaskets for the crank-case, but they wont be here for a week, and I still need oil seals and head gasket plus base gasket.

Or does anyone else have a better idea?

I reckon the pressure plus the residue inside the hole will just blow it out or push past it to be honest.

I wouldn't start blocking it up until you know what it is first.

As a temp measure can you not push a piece of pipe into it and run it above the engine (breather style). If you had a piece that was a tight fit you may be able to smear a little silicone around it but you'll have to clean it up as best as possible.

Lol! I didnt think of that! No nails plus a hose? Would that work? lol

EDIT: Hmmm, just had a quick look, it looks like the hole is about 5mm internal diameter. But I have an issue, The gasket goes right up the split of it. Are you sure gasket putty wont hold? =P I would have thought it'd expand under heat and make it harder to remove push back out

Also, there is no mention of it in my haynes manual from what I can see, but I'll just triple check.

Ah, you didn't say that originally Wink

It may hold and if it's all you have then it's worth a try, whats the worst that could happen eh?

What concerns me is why it's leaking now - all of a sudden I mean.....

It started off as me seeing my bike smoking slightly? like small whisps of smoke or steam from that area...
then it slowly started leaking oil from that area, so I continued to top it up as it wasnt leaking much at all
THEN I got a haynes manual for the bike and realised STUPIDLY That I was meant to check the oil level with the dipstick UNSCREWED. Doh!
Checked it screwed. Was at min...
Checked it unscrewed, not even touching it... top up 50 ml... nothing. another 50... nothing... cue a total of 200ml later (Out of 700mm for the whole engine) and it shown up on the dipstick. started her up and she ran a LOT quieter than normal, but oil started running down the side of the engine from the mentioned spot. What makes it worse, Just had a look at the haynes manual at the pic of the crank-cases and the bit I need to look at (The tunnel thing) seems to carry on straight, Then head down, then cuts off from going down but the OTHER crankcase half is in the way and I cant see wether it leads anywhere else. It doesnt seem to.
Haynes manual makes no reference or mention to a crank-case breather or anything.

Check this site, it's a partsfiche for the bike Thumbs Up

See if you can find the bit and stick it on here as it's hard to understand where it actually is.

Yes, but the PC50 from 69-early 72 had overhead cam arrangement, then they opted for overhead valve mid72 onwards.

If it's on top then it is surely a breather?. It will leak if you turn the engine upside down. Simple fix - don't turn the engine upside down Wink

Is it actually leaking oil when the engine is running? If so, how much?

Ummm, it was running for about 30 seconds, and oil just ran down the side of my engine... I'd say I lost about 30ml of oil...

It was litterally running down both sides of the engine and dripping onto the floor.

Same engine, but I cant see a breather pipe...I'll try and get a pic of my engine in a sec from the same sort of angle.
In my haynes manual it makes no mention of a breather pipe at all and there isnt one in any of the diagrams...

Laughing

If its on top of the engine, that looks like an engine breather to me.

Check your oil levels. That will cause it to piss out if its overfilled.

It was leaking from there even when it was below minimum. It wasnt leaking at ALL when I got it
And it was correctly topped up when it started pissing it out... Followed haynes manual precisely.

Ok, I have no clues as to what oil it runs Laughing

Is there any other breather on the engine?

Nope. None at all as far as I can see. Which does seem a bit strange, but I would have expected to see a mention of it in my haynes manual if there was one under the troubleshooting section but it is NOT mentioned anywhere. Not even in the bit at the back

It has to be a breather. You said there was gasket in the middle of the hole. If it's in the middle of the hole then it's not actually doing anything.

Up to you but if it were me I would be pushing that piece of unused gasket to the side, adding a small metal pipe, chemical metalling the pipe in place and running a rubber breather pipe upwards with a breather cap and then see what happens.....

The above is JUST what I would do. Not suggesting you should do it but we're just going round in circles here with not actually being there to see it in person. Thumbs Up
