Hey guys,

Put new bridgestone 014's on my R6 about 5 weeks ago,
Ive covered 1760 miles in that time and the tyre is on the limit already!

I have been riding fairly hard but not much straight line stuff, mostly twistys,

Is this normal?

Im looking at the michelin dual compounds next, Any recommendations?

No...

Although, ive only done 100 miles on the 014 on the GSXR, it is definitely "sticky" so im guessing they wear fast!!!

Not that fast though... what pressures you running?!

014s aren't the hardest wearing tyre ever to be honest. 1.7k is pretty shocking. I guess you mean just the rear is on the limit rather than the pair?

Too many burnouts?

Personally I don't like Michelins, but the pilot power 2cts seem to get decent review. I didn't like them however.

Personally I'd go for Corsa IIIs but that's just me.

Pirelli Angel ST is my recommendation anyway Thumbs Up Couldnt fault them on the Daytona Mr. Green

Also a quick google suggests 40psi rear... low pressures would be excessively wearing your tyres away

Couldn't be arsed to put more air in, or chose to run them at those pressures/

Front and rear both fooked, or just the rear?

Its only after noticing the wear that i am fiddling with pressures.
I think a lesson learned here.

I now hate bridgestone forever, LOL

do protyre fit tyres not supplied by them?

Dont hate BS, they make good tyres, within reason.

Run the tyres at stock pressures, you down to 1mm on the rear after <2000 miles, definitely something wrong.

As I said, pirelli angel st Wink

How do you ride? I did about 1800 miles on a GSXR1000, 1500 of those on a Pirelli Corsa III, and I wasnt keeping it slow or dignified Laughing

The GSX-R chewed through a rear in 2K, my ZXR400 managed 3K on a rear boot, and when I picked up the 'Blade I was told it had a set of 014's about 300 miles before I got it, and the rear was shagged after I put another 1000 on it, and the front has now done supposedly about 3000 and it is completely and utterly shagged, below the marker all over.

They're sticky tyres, but IMO they lack any sort of longevity whatsoever. Michelin's are just as grippy, and seem to last very, very well. I managed 7500 miles from a rear Pilot Power on the GSX-R, and I had one fitted to the 'Blade which has just covered the 3K mark and is hardly showing signs of wear.

I've generally stuck with Bridgestone. I always have a feeling there is something better, but when spending ~£200+ on tyres I prefer to stick to ones I know I like.

Others i've used on bikes I've not known as well so cant comment as much. I've tried the 014, 015 and 016. I'd try the 016 for better wear, it's a multi-compound jobby.

With tyre life, mine has generally got better as i've ridden more. I think going fast but smoother (i.e. going into corners with less braking/accelerating between them) gives the tyres more life.

These are pretty good tyres, Not sure if the R6 is a 180 or 160 rear.

I'm pretty sure I was on course to get nearly 4k miles out of the 016s I had on my SP1 before I sold it to blackwolf, I was half way through them at about 2k or so, mind you he proceeded to tear them to bits within a few weeks if I remember right, it's all down to how smooth and merciful you are with that throttle. Letting your pressures drop that much isn't a good idea on the road though.

As far as tyre recommendations go, I've always found decent sports touring tyres to be the more confidence inspiring as they tend to be more consistent if you haven't got the talent to start pushing them too hard. Roadsmarts and pilot road 3s are my favourites so far and seem to offer more grip than I could certainly ever use on the road.

I would get just over 2k out of an 014 on my 2000 reg CBR6 and Im a stickler for having the right pressures. That was a combo of commute (fairly straight) and weekend fun. Never got it as low as that apart from the time I only got about 250 out of one because of a screw Sad

I thought they were great tyres most of the time. Good grip when warm, shit when cold and on the limit they gave up without any notice whatsoever!

Dual compound Pilot road 2's saw about 1800 miles on my hayabusa and were still in good nick!

I always used to feel the same, it's a bit worrying spunking £200+ on a pair of tyres you dont know you get on with, but I'm so glad I listened to everyone about Michelin. IME they suit me perfectly, and they last really well. I've heard a lot of good things about Pirelli's, so if I find a set cheap or something I'd give them a go just to see what they're like.

Personally I'd never buy another set of Bridgestone's. As I said, they grip well but they just dont last at all, and I've heard the same stories from a lot of mates who've used them.

If its on the limit and you've been doing 'mostly twisties' that doesn't really make sense. Where exactly is it on the limit?

Put a picture up Wink

I just replaced my 014's I did 3,700miles on mine, swapped them for 016's much better tyres and seem to be a little more hard wearing.

A softer compound will give more grip and wear rapidly. A harder compound will wear better but provide less grip.

I had BTs on a Triumph Sprint ST which never hung around much in bends but I got reasonable wear.
The 600 Thundercat would eat back tyres though. Sometimes 3 rear in one year.
I think lighter bikes spin the tyre more than the heavy bikes do.

I was getting well over 5k out of Metzlers on my BMW R1200GS but when I swapped to COntinentals that was slashed to 3.5K

I think if you want grip and chuck your bike around corners then you need to pay for tyres more often. A simple equation.

And I don't fuck about with tyres on my bikes now. I fit wot the OEM fit. I get just as much joy with std. fit.

My BT014's lasted me 6k on the front and about 3k on the back of my ZX6R. I swapped the rear for a BT020 and regretted it! That tyre single handedly changed my opinion of bridgestone. Conveniently for me Dunlop came out with their roadsmarts and I haven't looked back - it's a heavy compromise. Because I do in excess of 12k a year, I would need to be a very rich man to be able to afford sticky rubber every 2-3 months at £120 a pop! As well as tyre pressure, make sure your suspension is set correctly for rider and road to give your rubber an easier time.

The 014's are old tech anyway and have been superseeded by the 016. But with any sports tyre, if you're not using it for motorway slogs or commutes and only use it for weekend scratching, you'd be fine. If not, go with the multitude of sports touring rubber out there - Dunlop Roadsmarts, Michelin PR2/3's. Bridgestone BT023's are amongst the top rated and in terms of tyre technology, they are equivalent to sports tyres of 3-4 years ago but with added longevity. It won't surprise me if the BT023's perform as well as an 014 (which is from 2004 i think). Needless to say, most of the bikes at my work (a few fireblades, zx10's and FZ1's just to name a few) are armed with sports touring jobbies with very small chicken strips (1cm is acceptable), so it goes to show that they can be ridden hard.

It's a good way of saving money, and unless you do track days, I don't see it as being a compromise!
