I'm quite interested in travelling down to the Isle of Man TT event but I've been told there's a waiting list for tickets, how does that work exactly? A friend of my fathers says they're pretty exclusive and there's at least a year long waiting list.

I see there are tickets on sale but for the grandstands only? Is it still possible to travel across on the ferry and just watch from the side of the road or do they have marshalls preventing you from getting near? If so, where do you get these tickets?

Thanks.

A quick trip to the offical IOM TT sites allows me to purchase tickets for granstands on Sat 4Jun, Mon 6Jun & Wed 8Jun

Your problem is more likely to be getting there and somewhere to stay at such short notice...

It's the ferry he's on about. They normally invite people to 'register an interest' in a ticket for next year's event just after the event is held. They ask you to place a deposit (£20) on a ticket but don't tell you how much the tickets will be. Then, when they have worked out how much they want to charge people, they tell them and you have to pay or lose your twenty quid.

There's not much other scope for getting there, they're the only ferry company.

Stinks imho.

You can fly of course, but wont have your bike obviously.

The grandstand tickets are cheap and easy to get from the website as already mentioned. Most people just watch from the road, there are lots of great places to set up for the day and watch, see this previous post.

Accommodation is your biggest worry now, lots of people rent out rooms in their house as its legal to do this for the TT, so that may be an avenue to explore.

go on steam-packet website there are tickets for sale but crap times as all the best ones have gone. you can ring up as well like we did this year.

my advice is book a ticket on the days you want to go, even if they are crap times you can normally change these closer to the date if you keep ringing up and asking for cancelations.

we have done this for the past 2 years, 3 including this year.

regarding watching the racing, you can watch for free from pretty much most of the circuit but you sometimes need to be a early riser to get to the best places. the grandstand prices are stupid. we have watched at least 2 races every year from in the grandstand and havent paid once. you can just walk in most of the time when the stuards arent looking

if you want to know anything else ask me or go to iomtt.com.

There are plenty of homestay rooms available, go to the forum on iomtt.com and scroll down to the accommodation section.

Alternatively if you are camping there are loads of campsites on the island with good facilities and reasonable rates.
